Suggest toys for my 10mo old
 

Looking for toys that can be taken apart/put together by little hands. Babe is really interested in how things fit together. Puzzles are okay, but he doesn't seem to care about pictures, so that aspect of puzzles doesn't do much for him. He loves his shape-sorter, but I think he would like something that has more function... like a car where the wheels come on and off? Ideas?

P.S. please nothing with batteries.

Plan Toys makes the Nuts and Bolts set and Guidecraft makes a block that comes with chunky bolts and a driver. For my 16 month old, I went with the Guidecraft. I'm also getting the Plan Toys thing that has balls you hammer into a box. Sorry I can't think of names atm.

I like the Green Toys brand and will definitely go to them for more imaginative play stuff. I wish my kiddo's birthday were in Summer because I think he would be into that by then. Oh well, guess I will have to get it for no occasion except I love him.


The geometric sorting boat and train seem right up his alley. They are getting short-listed!


We have a ball and ramp, and a hammer toy, both of which he likes. I found the guidecraft bolt block and it looks like something he would definitely enjoy.

One word of advice on the train - when all the blocks come off, the stacking parts are basically spikes. We let our DS free play a lot by himself and watch from a bit away, because I want him to play with things how he sees fit. Eventually he would lose interest in the train, and one time bailed backwards onto the empty stacking parts. He rarely cries when he bails and he was freaking out, I think it really hurt. Now when he takes all the stuff off and loses interest, I take the train bases out and let him play with the blocks.

Also, my DS loves to take things apart and inspect them, and put them back together. One of his favorite things is to unscrew lids off things. I bought some containers from Target and the Container store, as well as gave him an empty Nalgene bottle, and he likes to unscrew the lids and try to see how they all fit together. Not a toy to buy per se, but I see him playing with that a ton.

I second the recommendation of some kind of stacking/nesting toy. My baby really loves his set of nesting bowls. We have some nesting boxes too but he is still a little too small for them.

I also agree with the whole container-cover thing. When I am washing dishes I set the baby down next to the cupboard where I keep all my storage jars and he goes to town. He works really hard trying to figure out what will fit where.

You are psychic! We have one small set of blocks that include a couple pegs and rings, and babe will spend 20 minutes with just the peg and ring shapes! This is so perfect, I almost don't want to wait until Christmas!
