I really messed up
I have 15 jars of frozen turkey stock and I overfilled them all. Each one of the glass jars is cracked.
I need this stock. What would you do to salvage it? Any ideas? |
Re: I really messed up
How cracked? If it is just one big crack could you defrost them upside down. If they are mason jars take the lid off, place cheese cloth on top, screw the bracket thing (sorry for my pregnancy brain I can't think of what they are called) back on that way you have a filter to catch any glass shards.

:hugs:
I'd be too paranoid to try to salvage it :( |
Re: I really messed up
I have done the same thing. Totally stinks! What I did was line a fine mesh strainer with a diaper flat (or you could use a tea towel too). Set that in a big bowl. Then I set the jar in the strainer and let it thaw. When it was completely thawed, I carefully picked up the diaper and carried it out to the trash and dumped the glass. I haven't had to throw any away because for the most part the glass broke into large chunks.

I'd run it through fine cheesecloth or a coffee filter. Most likely, if its just a stress crack in the glass, the stock is probably just fine.

Re: I really messed up
I think the best idea is the to line a mesh strainer with something more substantial than cheesecloth. I would use a double thickness of tea towel.

Re: I really messed up
If the jar is just cracked and not broken i would strain and use. If the glass shattered into pieces iwouldn't chance it

Just want to say thanks for the advice. The stock is gelatinous and a few of the jars have many cracks. I'm hiding my head in the sand about it right now. :(

Re: I really messed up
I wonder if it could be heated in a double boiler using the tea towel method?
