What temp do you medicate?
Our ER visit tonight left me questioning myself. So I'm curious when do you medicate your children? If its not a certain temp is it behavior?

Re: What temp do you medicate?
I medicate anything above 102, or anything below 102 if they are not comfortable. Lethargic, won't eat for an extended period, etc. All reasons that I medicate.

Rarely.
Chills or lethargy. I don't even own a thermometer. If they have a fever and are acting ok just sick with a cold/tummy bug then we leave it alone. |
Re: What temp do you medicate?
I medicate most all fevers, aches, & pains.

103+ and only if prolonged, but I'd also be trying to figure out cause vs just medicating. Fever reducers have side effects and how high a fever gets and length of time it remains can be a good indication if a child has a bacterial infection.

all tylenol, ibuprofin, etc. does is make your child more comfortable, does nothing for actually shortening the cold/fever. That being said, i give it to him whenever he looks uncomfortable or if he has a temp above a 100 just in case he is uncomfortable.

Over 101 or if he is in a lot of pain. When he has croup we sometimes medicate at 100 if it helps to calm him and let him sleep easier.

Depends on the age of the child too.
I'm a bit more cautious with wee little ones and high fever. I gave a single does of Ibuprofen to my1 yo when her fever spiked to 102 and she was very fussy. My bigger kids I mostly watch behavior. If they are uncomfortable headaches, body aches, chills, ect I will medicate for that. Otherwise the fever runs its course. |
