I want my newborn to have some personality.
So when does the "light in the eyes" of recognition come? Right now, my face can cross his field of vision, but he just looks anywhere and everywhere randomly, without seeming to notice or focus on anything in particular. I'm so ready for him to SEE me (see me enough that I can recognize that he's doing so). He's 24 days old today.

Oh gosh I never remember. If you pay attention though, I bet he turns towards your voice. He knows your smell. I think closer to 8 weeks... it takes time, they've been in the dark for 9 months! :) They do begin showing a preference for faces over other objects generally pretty early.

I have a picture of one of DD2's first smiles at 5 weeks old. Not too much longer!

Re: I want my newborn to have some personality.
Was he early? DS1 was born a 36 weeks and the first time he made real eye contact and had real smiles was about 2 months old. DS2 smiled as soon as he was born (REAL smiles) and made eye contact and had a lot of personality immediately. I don't know if it was because he was of term, or just difference in personality..but, something to consider.
