I think many Disney/Pixar movies have the word "idiot" in them. It really surprised me, but it was one of our first, "Just because you heard it doesn't mean you can say it..." lessons.
My kids have all watched Shrek. They think he is funny, and although I do cringe at some of the rude-ness, it is manageable for us. That said, OP, if you have issues with it, let your inlaws know that you would like to know what will watched during visits.
