cookie icing help

We wanted to make these http://www.puttisworld.com/2010/12/painted-cookies.html as an activity for dd's tea party. I tried it out to see if it actual works and the painting did. Worked really well. I have never really gotten into cookie decorating before so I didn't know what to expect. The girls are going to love it.

Anyway, I used basic cookie icing recipe. 1 cup confectioners sugar, 2 tbsp milk and 2 teas corn syrup. It was so disgusting sweet I thought I would puke. So very sweet. I don't think adding vanilla or lemon extract would work to tone it down. This is what those cookies are based on http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2010/0...day-gift-idea/ . She uses regular frosting but she uses markers instead of "paint". Do you think regular frosting the way she has done it will hold up to water and food coloring paint? Or what about those cookie frosting pouches http://www.walmart.com/ip/10314080?w...l5=pla&veh=sem . I was already planning on getting some of these to use with sprinkles on some of the cookies. Now that dd is planning on painting cookies we HAVE to do it.
