Diagnosed gd as a scare tactic??

I refused the gd test and the hospital midwife told me to take my blood sugar 4 times a day for a week to check my sugar levels. They were all fine except once was a bit high (I had a lot of carbs and ice cream for dinner though!)
When I went in she told me while my sugars were good, if I don't take the 3 hr test he is going to diagnos me with gd. And said "by the way, that will make you unable to have the water birth you mentioned" in a very snaky tone. I feel like she is threatening me. I told her I need to think about my options and will get back to her. She is the most "natural birth friendly" option in my area. I don't know hat to do!

It sounds like she's trying to warn you about the ob.

Why not just take the GD test?

I took the one hour and it made me really sick. I did some research and the syrup drink they use is really unhealthy. I know its just one more time, but its not safe IMO.

If it made you sick isn't that a sign of GD? There isn't really anything unsafe about sugar, but there is a lot unsafe about gd if not diagnosed.

It makes me sick and I've never had GD.

But - and I mean this in the least snarky way possible - it seems odd to me that you'll eat ice cream, yet in the same breath you claim that Glucola isn't healthy. Ice cream is a far cry from healthy, too. What are your specific concerns?

I'd compromise on this one, honestly. I've taken the 3 hour test twice; it sucks, it made me ill, but it was over in a few hours and life went on.

I have to agree here. I totally understand your frustration, but I wonder if here might be a good place to compromise. Ice cream isn't too hot (no pun intended...lol. I cracked myself up over that. Been a long day!)

Just doesn't make much sense. You carb loaded for dinner and got a high reading....which could put you in the GD range. A normal healthy person should be able to tolerate some pasta and ice cream for dinner and have normal sugar levels.

I would do the GD test because some hospitals will take the newborn to the nursery for a 24 hour hold to watch their blood sugars in moms who skipped or passed on the GD test.

Ditto. Undiagnosed GD can cause a lot of problems for the baby, some of them, such as the thickening of the heart walls, can impact your baby for a lifetime. I don't like doing the test, either, that sugary drink makes me want to vomit, but feeling a little yucky because of a drink, vs increasing the risk of seizures and heart problems for my baby is a no-brainer for me.

It sounds like you are getting in to a power struggle with your provider, which is never a good thing. You probably want to switch providers. In addition, even though I personally think taking the GD test is a good thing, you have right to refuse any procedure or test, and your HCP needs to respect that. They should, as a good HCP, educate you plainly about the risks, and those risks could mean that it increases the risk of death for your baby. But if you hear all of the info and still refuse, they need to move on. I refuse a fair number of tests, and after we talk about risks, if I still refuse, my OB's have all let it go. Maybe you should see someone more professional.

Oh, and a normal person can do a major sugar load and still have normal sugars later. Your body is very good at keeping blood sugar levels normal, unless there is some pathology going on there. Can your midwife refer you to a endocrinologist so you can talk with him/her about diabetes? It sounds like you don't trust your midwife's knowledge, so maybe a specialist will help.

there is a lot unsafe about sugar and dyes! Sugar is linked to diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and cholesterol, etc.

Do your research before spouting off stuff like that. If she has no signs of GD and her 1 hour test was fine, there is NO reason to take a 3 hour. I'm refusing both because there is no reason for me to take it. In fact, my numbers would be wacky because I don't eat sugar on a regular basis and my body would freak to consume that much in one go.
