How long is meat good for once frozen?

I haven't been paying attention to whats been in my freezer and last night I cleaned it out.

I found a pork shoulder from April 23rd. It's been frozen since I bought it and I totally forgot about it. It's defrosted now because I plan to cook it tonight if it's still good. Whats your thoughts? Would you feed it to your family?

I would. We still have stuff from late 2009 we are eating and we are fine.

We get a steer butchered from my brother every fall...around Sept/Oct and we are just finishing up the last of last years now...so I would say honestly a year should be fine. It's frozen right away, and we don't let it "sit out" to thaw for long times in the fridge or anything...and we've never had an issue at all. Our freezer is an upright old thing that sits at between -2 and 0 degrees. Works great for us!

Our butcher said as long as it's not freezer burned (so pack it air-tight), up to a year in a deep freeze is safe and 6 months in a regular freezer.

I just play it by ear based upon whether or not it looks freezer burned. I also do a smell check when it is thawing as well as when cooking.
