Establishing supply
Hello everyone. I am new to breastfeeding. I was wondering the average amount of time it takes to establish a good supply of breastmilk. My baby was three weeks old yesterday. I won't be going back to work for six more weeks but want to make sure I have a good supply for him when I do return. TIA!

It depends on the person. Once my milk comes in, I'm good. I even pumped exclusively for DD1 for 6 months no problem. If you nurse on demand, especially at night, it goes better. And try to establish a regular pumping schedule when you go back.

Are you asking when you should start pumping? I would pump once a day, ideally in the morning. That should give you a pretty good stash. Maybe a week's worth depending on how well you respond to the pump.

Re: Establishing supply
I've been told 2 months. . .meaning better not to supplement before then if you want to be sure to have a good supply for your LO. Also, be sure to nurse on demand. If he seems hungry/gives you signs feed him even if you think "he shouldn't be hungry again yet". I'm sure you know this, but there tummies are tiny and they do need to eat often and every BFing relationship is different. My first wanted to nurse every hour and this baby will go 3 hours before showing signs of hunger.
Trust that your baby and your body are dancing together and that they both know just what to do/what they need. . .sometimes our heads gt in the way. ![]() If you're asking about creating stash, then I guess it would all depend on how much extra you can pump.
