Croup?
Okay so Friday DD struck a fever suddenly and has been sick sense (though her fever went away). Tonight she woke up crying and with the Barky cough and it seems like its taking more work for her to take deep breaths. Is it croup? Back in February this same thing happened though she was much worse (could barely breathe) and we took her to the ER and they told us she had croup then. They also said it wouldn't be uncommon for her to get it again now that she'd had it. I remember getting advice at the time (maybe on here?) about things to do to get through the night, but can't quite remember. Am I supposed to run the hot shower and let her sit in the steamy room or stand in front of the freezer for a few minutes with her? I just can't remember if heat or cool air was supposed to help more. Any advice is great thank you so much!

Cool air helps more. Croup is a virus that swells the upper part of the tracheal opening. Treat the symptoms (fever, cool mist humidifier) and go to the ER if breathing becomes labored. They will give him a croup specific breathing treatment, but it also just treats the symptom of swelling. Good luck! From your friendly neighborhood respiratory therapist

We gave her medicine to treat the fever and that went away yesterday morning. I thought she was getting better but then tonight woke up with this. She is very alert and even wants to talk and play so it's definitely not as bad as it was in February but she has the barky cough and I can hear in her breathing a little bit of trouble. (obviously nothing too concerning or I'd be in the ER) I just want to help ease the cough so it doesn't wake her up. Should I be worried being around it since I am expecting?

Don't worry too much, croup is rarely spread to adults, but can be very easily to other children. Just watch the breathing, and keep her comfortable at home unless something drastically changes.
