Re: Does this seem normal or should I get my child checked out?
Wait, 3's are an ugly age too? Noooooo!
![]() We just dove into the terrible two's within the last few months. My Dd is definitely asserting some independence. I'm trying to make sure she has a voice in things and her opinion is heard. She usually flips out for the following reasons. 1. Not having a chance to fully experience something, even if it's the experience of throwing handfuls of uncooked rice all over the kitchen. She also gets the experience of cleaning up when that happens 2. Not giving her the chance to accomplish something herself, even if the frustration of doing it sets off a tantrum. 3. Not getting something she wants. Sometimes the tantrums are unavoidable. Acknowledging that she is upset really helps. Other times, ignoring them is better. If I catch on that a tantrum is a punishable offense, she'll get a 2 minute time out and a talk about what behavior needs correction. Advertisement

I have not had quite to the extent yours has, but I am having a tough time with my 2 y/o too. It seems like constant meltdowns and I'm just GAHHHH somedays trying to deep breath and stay calm when he's melting down AGAIN.

Re: Does this seem normal or should I get my child checked out?
Yes that is normal for a two year old. My kids were once like that but they grew up understanding every little thing. Your daughter's behavior will eventually subside once she grows up.

I say whoever made the phrase "terrible twos" had never met a three year old. ![]() OP, Have you checked for molars coming in. The sleep thing could be the two year molars starting to come in.

Re: Does this seem normal or should I get my child checked out?
Mine turns 2 next month. She is angelic. There must be something wrong with your child. KIDDING!
Your little one sounds quite normal, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with having her evaluated if you're concerned. Yesterday my daughter decided she would like to run like a wild woman through Burlington. She has always walked nicely and held my hand before, so I was letting her walk. I had to get her brother a shirt for a program at school so I just got in a out of there as fast as I could. Unfortunately, the shirt I grabbed was barcodeless and i was stuck waiting for them to call to figure out a price. My daughter screamed at the top of her lungs the whole 15 minutes we were in there. "No, Mama!" "Down, Mama." "Don't do dat, Mama!" "Owwwwwwwie, Mama!" (No, I wasn't hurting her. I just wouldn't let her help herself to candy in the checkout aisle.). I was glad she was calling me mama because otherwise her behavior might indicate she was being kidnapped. ![]() All that to say, you are not alone! My eldest was a challenging 2 year old as well. Actually, he is just an intense person in general. My middle child has always been adaptable, calm, and generally lovely in almost every situation. My youngest is going to give us a run for our money. With my first child, I was mortified. This time around, I am just enjoying watching her personality unfold.

The main thing I find concerning is lack of effectiveness of your discipline methods. For most kids you can find something that works to get you through those situations they must obey. If your mommy radar is going off an evaluation like you mentioned is never a bad idea IMO.

Re: Does this seem normal or should I get my child checked out?
we're having a FUN day here.. mommy is not doing so well dealing with it.
and someone at our playgroup decided that they were going to reward my child's tantrum with positive attention! thank you so much! because my strategy of ignoring my child's tantrum was obviously misguided.
