Do you think the movie Shrek is appropriate for a 4 year old?

Like other posters said, most of it will go over children's heads... But the narrative is clearly not meant for children, IMHO.

My DD is younger, so I don't know how I'll feel when she's that age, but right now I don't think I would. I do believe there is a difference with G and PG. I was shocked when watching Cars the other day that they said "idiot" and that's a G movie. Just not needed

You certainly have the right to determine what your kids watch. However, we love the Eureka movies in our house. They started watching them at younger than 4 and have several times since.

I think many Disney/Pixar movies have the word "idiot" in them. It really surprised me, but it was one of our first, "Just because you heard it doesn't mean you can say it..." lessons.

My kids have all watched Shrek. They think he is funny, and although I do cringe at some of the rude-ness, it is manageable for us. That said, OP, if you have issues with it, let your inlaws know that you would like to know what will watched during visits.

I let my kids watch it. But then again, my kids watch everything lol. I mean, one of their favorites movies is killer klowns from outer space :/ they don't ever mimic things they see though, if they did I would probably be more cautious with what they watch.

I'd just give the in laws a list of movies that are ok. They should respect that
