Re: 5.5 month old weaning to solids
She needs formula if you can't breast feed her. We never give rice cereal, we always started with vegetables (puréed) she is too little to be able to chew and swallow whole food. She has to learn how to do that first. You really should consult your pediatrician.

Re: 5.5 month old weaning to solids
She definitely needs breastmilk or formula as the bulk of her nutrition until 1. Solids before then are just for fun, not for nutrition. How long have you been not breastfeeding? I would put her to the breast very often and hold off on solids all together until your supply is back. It's very easy to relactate - in fact, I doubt you ever stopped. I lactated for almost a year after weaning DS1 completely from the breast. If you no longer want to breastfeed though, you definitely need to provide formula. If she's on forumla, it's no harm feeding her solids, cereals, fruits, veggies, whatever. Do new foods for 3 or 4 days at a time though, so if an allergy occurs you'll know what it was that caused it. Otherwise, if you breastfeed, I would not do solids at all right now.
