The spanking debate.

I've found it to be mostly unnecessary, but a useful form of discipline in some situations. Some of my children have been spanked, others haven't. I tend to parent to the individual child rather than by some set philosophy.

Me, personally, I take that to mean ANY form of discipline. Some people believe that it is speaking of a rod (disciplinary tool, could be your hand), and actually spanking your child.

I find that really alarming. Let's say someone did decide to spank why would it be necessary to hit until there was a bruise. That just seems like someone got out of control.

That often happens when people spank out of anger. To me, it's abuse. My kids (when they do get spanked rarely) get ONE single swat. It's enough to get their attention, and make them think twice before doing whatever it was that they did to get in trouble. This is after numerous warnings/timeouts/writing sentences for the same offense. It's definitely used as a last resort for us. But I have to be honest - it works.

We will not spank, but I do give DD a smack in the hands when necessary. I only do it I she is trying to repeatedly get into something that might hurt her. For example, she kept trying to get the Christmas lights. The first 3-4 times I will say no. It can hurt you, etc... And move her away/try to redirect her. If she continues to go back an grab the lights I will give her hands a smack and say no and move her away. She needs to know that playing with the tree can hurt her, but I would rather control it with a little smack than have her get burned by the lights or pull the tree down on her.
