With out 4th we brought two dozen and it got us through. We stayed the minimum 24 hours and went home. our most recent was born at home

I was there for 40 hours after my last dd's birth (I would have left sooner, but she was born at night, I had to wait on a ped, etc). I took 24 flats - it worked great. I wasn't worried about anything getting damaged or anything, and if one had gotten lost or left behind, it wouldn't have caused me heartbreak. Two dozen was plenty, though I bet I went through more than half of them in that time. I didn't rinse anything.

The nurses all thought using cloth was pretty cool. One of them, though, asked me if I knew when the diapers were wet. I said yes, and she asked how I knew. I said, "Um, because it feels wet. It's cotton, just like if you get regular clothes wet, you can feel it." She said, "Oh, I only know when the babies have wet diapers because the line on the front turns green." ROFL!

This is good info for me! Do you scrape out the contents and save the rinsing for home before washing? I'm definitely BFing BTW.

No need it. BM is water soluble.

Yep DD#2 was CDed from birth, EBFed (no formula ever) and it all washed out. The EBF poo diapers do stain bad but the sun takes care of that.

I agree you don't technically need to rinse them. However, meconium in those first few poopy diapers might stain your diapers a little more if you don't rinse. It's not really a big deal, you can try to sun the stains out later.

Great info here, thanks! I'm planning to pack my NB prefolds, NB covers, and some smalls just in case, as well as my wipes. I'm just going to throw them in wet bag and make my FIL (he lives with us) take the dirties home if they get excessive. I may bring a couple Lil' Joeys and some fitteds, just as a back-up.

Even though I am having a home birth I am still planning on packing a hospital bag, just in case we have to transfer. So I will plan on taking my 24 prefolds and three covers...probably some AIO's as well just in case the nurses have to help.
