DS has orthopedic inserts now, and I am having trouble finding shoes wide enough for the inserts to fit. I am interested in trying some "extra-wide" shoes in size 8 or 8.5 (toddler), but I have not been able to find any locally. I'd like them to be really cheap since I don't know if they would even work; condition does not matter as long as there are no major holes.

I think I have a pair of 8 wide but not sure about extra wide. What's the difference?

have you tried payless? As they regularly stock wide toddler shoes.

Extra wide are even wider. His feet are already wide, and with the inserts, they do not fit in a wide shoe.
