The pic I put in the OP was an example of it going flat after a while. I was trying to avoid the hassle of uploading a new pic, so I just used one I had already on our blog. It can also look like this:

I have curls of similar texture. I would cut it...longest layer to the shoulder and shortest to the chin. It looks weighed down on top. A little length off would help it lift and curl at the root.

That said, she definitely has a lot of wave/bend/curl in her hair as it is now. I'd look into the CG method (when I do what I'm supposed to, my hair looks great!) & consider getting her hair shaped (b/c the overall length isn't bad) by someone who really specializes in curly, wavy, or textured hair. I just got my first Deva Cut & it really is incredible, but I've also gotten good Ouidad cuts, texture & shape cuts, & even from a few non-specialist stylists who really know curly hair. The way you wash it & handle it will probably make the biggest difference...I'd recommend getting the Curly Girl Handbook. The 2nd edition comes with a DVD that demonstrates how to give a good trim at home, too. It might even be available through your local library. |

yes - I guess I knew we can't go back to baby hair.
![]() wouldn't that be wonderful for all of us if we could! We kind of do some "curly girl" stuff. No Poo, only sulfate free conditioner, comb when wet. But I just put the book on hold from the library (good idea).

I had Shirley temple curls. As long as my hair was just trimmed, I had them. Around 7 I got a bad cut. They cut off several inches and my curls never came back. My hair is more on the curly side now but nothing like before. I have discovered you need to find someone who knows how to work with curls or it could damage them big time.

Re: Cut 5yr old's curly hair or not?
I cut my 5 year old's hair this past summer when she was 4.5. She had gorgeous spiral curls and hair almost down to her bum. I cut about 6 inches off, and her curls were gone.
I was prepared for it though because I had heard that from a lot of people.
