Re: I need some help - DD may have hearing loss
Agree with all above. The signing too can't hurt- even if she ends up being hearing with some other issue (not sure what though since it sounds like a classic case of either bilateral hearing loss or at least loss in one ear like you said). The signing can really help her language development either way. I hope you find out what it is- keep us posted!

My DS started out with just a unilateral loss, he has an inner ear abnormality(EVA which was DX through a CT scan) in both ears though and has been losing hearing, so now it is bilateral. I hope you get some answers quickly for your LO, feel free to pm me as well

Get an ABR asap.It will tell you what's going on.
Start on giving her language and communication. Sign language will help.

Re: I need some help - DD may have hearing loss
Thanks everyone. We are on the road. I have a new SLP meeting her tomorrow with her early intervention worker. (IDP for those Canadian mamas). We have a ped appointment on the 12th (peds are specialists here) and I will ask to be sent for the ABR. Depending on what the ped thinks I may try to self refer to the early hearing loss program. I think generally parents should have a better idea of what kind of loss hearing loss they are dealing with before being referred but it isn't going to hurt to get a jump on the paperwork and potential waitlist. Thanks everyone SO MUCH. I'm having a really hard time with this - I lost my cell phone charger and ended up crying in my driveway for 30 minutes - lol. It isn't because of the hearing issues though, it's because we've BTDT having a special needs child and it is NEVER as simple as it seems like it is going to be. I already have kids in an average of 10 hours of therapy A WEEK and I just don't know how I am going to manage another new team

Re: I need some help - DD may have hearing loss
Thank you - it's been an AWFUL day. We will see what tomorrow brings with the new SLP. I think part of the problem for me is knowing the system already. I think my biggest fear isn't that something is "wrong" with my DD but just how am I going to find the time to navigate these waters again.

Re: I need some help - DD may have hearing loss
DS ate my post...
Anyway, the short version is that I think you'll find hearing loss much easier to navigate than autism. It has more of a protocol and once you are in the BC Hearing Program things will likely just tick along. Here is my favourite video ever. It's a neighbour girls getting her hearing aids as a preschooler. She can hear somewhat but was missing a lot of sounds (which is why her speech is 'off' in the video). She does great now and her speech is perfect. When she's in large groups she gives the teacher/guide leader an amplifier so we can talk right into her hearing aids (a tool I wish I had for ALL kids!!!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDaLX...layer_embedded |

Sounds like maybe Apraxia from your description. The hearing thing is very strange, but glad there's one less hurdle for you!
