Are there still home ec teachers in school?

The child development and the foods courses look like what you would expect. Some things I wish they had were some sort of sewing/mending/knitting or other textiles type of course, a gardening course, that maybe dabbled in a bit of canning, freezing that sort of thing. Also, something with basic home repairs would be great-how to repair a hole in drywall, how to do some basic plumbing repairs, that sort of thing. THAT, to me, is the REAL home ec stuff. And its stuff that so many people just don't know how to do anymore. If drano doesn't take care of the clog, call a plumber.

LOL - remembering my Home Ec class during my sophomore year of high school! Yes, it was pretty biased - basically all the girls took Home Ec and the boys took "Shop" - but it was very practical! There were the standard units on cooking and sewing, of course, but we also had the guest teacher from one of the cosmetic companies do a unit on skin care and natural makeup (a/k/a how not to look like Tammy Faye Baker). I also very vividly remember the days we spent at the staircase having lessons on "Why ladies don't run up and down steps" (let's just say the view isn't very flattering), how to walk up and down stairs in high heels, and how not to trip and fall on your face when wearing a long dress. We even had a class on how to get in and out of a car in a skirt without showing the world your underwear preferences.

My cousin has been teaching Family and Consumer Science for a few years now. She was fresh out of college

We had beginning and advanced food classes at my high school. And then there was a mandatory class called "Marriage and Family" that we had to take senior year that covered budgeting, balancing a checkbook, conflict resolution, job applications, sex ed, birth, basic childcare, that kind of thing. But I graduated back in '98. Not sure if they still do it now.

I am bumping my old thread I still want to do this. I had forgotten about this thread and was doing a search. Anyone know the degree required? I have a nursing degree now, would ideally like to take classes and enter a masters program.

We don't have home ec at the middle school I teach at and no idea of the high school does. I really think we still need these skills though!

It does still exist, though it goes by a different name now (and that varies by district). You should research if it is offered in your district and what the requirements are. Honestly, if you still have all four years to go an not just finishing up a degree I'm not sure it would be worth the punt of debt and time required. Jobs are going to be tough to come by and if budgets get rough I would imagine it would be one of the first programs to get cut.

I hate to be a downer, but I just want to be realistic. Good luck with whatever you decide to pursue!

I'm a nurse now. I thought of trying to enter a program at a Masters level. I have a sensible degree and such. You are totally right it likely wouldn't be worth the expense.

I have this degree . I have a bachelor's degree in secondary education with the endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). Secondary education (7-12) has to be endorsed in a specific subject area (math, science, FCS, etc). Yes, you can get a Master's Degree in secondary education with a FCS endorsement, just like a bachelors degree. I am assuming your nursing degree is a BSN? If you don't already have a bachelor's degree, you can't go straight to a Master's.

You can get a degree in a family and consumer sciences.
