Fenugreek, mothers milk tea, and thyroid issues.
I have an under active thyroid and low milk supply. Are fenugreek and tea okay? How much should I take? Thanks!

I'm not sure how it will affect your thyroid, but taking fenugreek and drinking mother's tea will definitely help increase your supply.

Undermedicated hypothyroid will hurt your supply. Fenugreek is safe to take, but if you don't medicate your thyroid, your supply will never be 100%.

Tons of water! Appox a gallon or more along with lots of fenugreek is key!

Re: Fenugreek, mothers milk tea, and thyroid issues.
I drink tons of water during the day, take levothyroxine (had levels checked 6 months ago)....I just think my LO is impatient and doesn't suck long enough. I get about an ounce when I pump. I started fenugreek this morning. The bottle said 2 capsules a day but everything online says 6 is average? I'm planning on taking 2 capsules twice a day and having one glass of tea at night. Any thoughts, better ideas? Thanks everyone!

Re: Fenugreek, mothers milk tea, and thyroid issues.
kellymom.com is a great website for info on increasing milk supply. In addition to fenugreek, extra pumping, and eating oatmeal also help. There are other galactagogues that you can take but fenugreek is a good one to start with. I think the average dose is 3 pills/3x a day.
here's a link to dosing on fenugreek. http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastf...ugreek/#dosage You might also want to read the section on kelly.mom where it states that your supply might be o.k. even though you think it's not. A baby is a lot more efficient than the pump. Is you lo having adequate weight gain? Enough wet diapers? Etc.? As a pp mentioned, you also want to be sure that your thyroid is at a level it needs to be at otherwise that will negatively affect your supply. You might want to get your level rechecked just to be sure it's o.k.

And, I can't afford to get the level rechecked any time soon. (Unless the fenugreek doesnt help, then i suppose ill have no choice) It's been the same for 9 years so hoping it hasn't changed.

Re: Fenugreek, mothers milk tea, and thyroid issues.
Pregnancy and post partum can do nasty things to your thyroid. I always go hyperthyroid after my babies and then crash hard by 3 months post partum. Then we double my usual dose for about 6 months, when things finally level out.
If you have a regular doctor, can you call in and request a blood test only, no appointment. Have them mail your test results and compare it to your previous results. No doctor appointment needed unless you need your meds upped. My doctor does it that way for me all the time.
