Re: ****Winter**** Chicken Moma chat thread. Join in the chat!

I'm sorry. They are probably working because for the first week or two it will bother them when they tap them and the prongs move around in their nose so they'll avoid that. But you def. will want to think about maybe fixing them one at a time so that the shield blocks their forward view or they'll still be able to aim and peck after a while.

The pen looks gorgeous! Will y'all come help dh build mine? LOL Construction is not his strong point.. love the man but it's true.

Sarah I'm sure you told me but I can't remember, when you set your shipped eggs, did you avoid turning them for 3 days like I've read on BYC?

ETA: Just set the mottled AM and silkie eggs now, don't want to wait too long, 2 of the silkie eggs are questionable to me. Really porous, so if they've got a chance the sooner the better.

Crowing contest going on for the last 5 minutes between Fred and one of the youngsters= funny!

Here's a pic of the eggs I just set! If you can read the temp, I know it's a little low still, I just set them an hour ago. Aren't the bottom ones just the prettiest blue! They're BIG too!

Oh Liz! Awesome and egg-citing! (yeah yeah, corny I know)

I have a guy coming to get my roosters tomorrow, just keeping george and one other for the neighbor. Sad, but only a little. Makes room for new chicks.

I know, I have a soft spot for the boys. I'm going to miss the little trio we've got roaming the back yard right now when they have to be butchered. They sit on the patio and look in the glass door and coo hoping I'll bring them more treats. I've been tossing all the leftovers out the back door to help fatten them.

Thanks, he got so much more done today I'm happy! He's been workin on it every day, all day. <3

I don't turn them. I kinda spin and tilt a bit. I don't tip the carton, just the eggs. I shoot for twice daily. I always use a carton though. I havn't had an egg yet that didn't have a detatched cell. I'm helping one hatch now that the cell healed all wacked. I don't think it will make it. One out of this whole shipment made it, that power uhoh. Only a cpl eggs are left from the other shipment set the 25th.

For the most part I have had horrible luck with the pourious ones. I have had prob 2 make it though. You can't tell they are developing inside, so it's super hard to judge those!

Haha!!!! I do the same thing! Solomon loves to hang at the back. I'm gonna make some sort of perch, like a swing set style, for back there to keep them off the steps!

I spent the day cleaning the coop and retrenching around the coop and run. I also sloped the inside and other things. I want the water to devert compleatly from the under coop run. A drier spot. I also extended the stone pathway around to the front to the coop. I keep falling. Ugh! There was also a pile of glass doors that were all busted along the fence. I cleaned that up. Dang, what a mess. hat was pretty much the last of the major trash that was here when we moved in.

So I had no brokens in the silkie eggs, two look pretty porous so those may not be good but I have 2 buff, 2 grey(blue), 2 white, 1 paint, 3 from a black/paint/white pen, and ... 2 partridge!!! Wheee!! [/COLOR]
I am so excited for you! It's a wonder they all arrived safe and sound, good luck on your hatch! I really wish we had some hatching eggs. We are at capacity (slightly over actually) but I expect at least one or two to start crowing sometime soon from our October/December babies. Maybe I can hatch a few if my silkie or Cochin goes broody, that would be so incredible.

I am lol'ing at the blinders. I missed what those were for, but they are so funny.

I found a couple small coops on Craigslist, they are exactly what we needed and are being delivered on Saturday. I know the price seems high, but we need something like this so we can move them around every couple days and need the girls to be contained for the most part when we are not outside, so the run is perfect. I got the last two he had left, he is a custom furniture maker and built four. The first two sold. I think two is a nice number to have so we can connect them at the run or use them to bring up the littles or for a broody mama.

Here is the ad, we are getting the chalet in large and are paying quite a bit less than his quoted prices.

Michelle, very nice!!!!

The blinders are for my littles in the coop. They are picking sholders and tails from the cockerals. The aprons didn't help. It was a last resort as I wasn't about to cull the boys. I need one blue cochin cockeral to be second in comand. I'm working at replacing some of my current flock with better quality. I have really improved on the feathering on shanks and middle toe. It's difficult. I keep getting brass bleeding through on the blues. Others don't have the feathered middle toe or shank. Work in progress. My little project. I don't have much to work with. I only have 1 blue hen, has horrible feathering on shanks and toes, and she also has brass bleeding through around the face and throat. Solomon is perfect, so that's a plus.

Thank you, I am beyond excited, I could squeal. I just got an email from him saying he would not charge any extra delivery since I ordered one more coop. At first I was thinking I would just buy one, but when I ran the idea of getting a second to DH he jumped in the idea because he thought the run was a lil dinky in the first place.

So, I emailed the builder to see if he still had the second one available, which thankfully he still did. We are finally going to have 2 nice safe spaces for the girls.

This reminds me of the age old question: "Which came first the chicken or the coop?"

I am NOT going to lose another bird to these stinky hawks.

Seems I miss so much on here, had no clue you were having to go to such lengths to keep the babies safe. What we do for our birds!

Totally off topic, but I started Zumba this week. Went to the night class last night, my calves are feeling it! My mom has been to 3 classes, last nights, this mornings and tonight's. She is 65 and runs circles around me. I thought the night class was too full with 33 ppl (the room they do it in is not much bigger than my living room!) so I told her I would take the morning class with her. But, I did not mean I would get up this morning and take it. LOL. That would be 2 classes in just barely 12 hrs. Um, she is psycho. Anyway, I will start morning class, supposed to be less ppl. It is actually really fun.
