bi polar medicine
Anyone have advice/experience bf while medicated for bi polar? I'm bp2 Shi I cannot take the regular antidepressants that have been deemed acceptable whine bf and I'm have a horrible time with the internet and desperately want to bf my second child. I'm fling in next month to come off my med (lamictal) to start trying this summer and I'll see what he says but I thought I'd ask here.
I know ff isn't the end of the world and I get that all the time but bf is something I'm very serious about and it broke my heart to not be able to with my first and I want to do everything I can to try and make it happen for my next one. |

Re: bi polar medicine
I don't know mamma BUT in my opinion, I would sooner see you in a good place. BF is very handy but I did both. If you are healthier while taken something - ANYthing that is not absolutely positively PROVEN safe, just ff.

I was on lamictal. Ihad to wean off of it when I found out I was pregnant with dd. she is 13 months old andi still am not back on it since she is still breastfeeding. i have good days and bad. It is worth it to me to be able to breastfeed her. Once she weans I will go back on it
hth.

Re: bi polar medicine
contact http://www.infantrisk.com/ to get the most up to date information regarding the choice of meds you wish to use.
Lamictel is an L3 when it comes to Dr. Hale. That means the recommendation is that "it is probably safe". Please see an LC for further information. They can provide you print outs to take to your doctor and pediatrician so you can discuss the real concerns as opposed to the CYA recommendations from the medication company.

Them you very much for the responses and the links. I would love to try without any needs but with how fast I got ppd (3 days after I had him) I don't think it'll work. I'll definitely check that out tibeca think you.

Re: bi polar medicine
My mom struggles with bipolar. She breastfed me until I was 18 months, my brother for a few months and then my sister until 6 months when she jsut had to go back on meds and switched her to formula. I don't have any advice about meds but I know that must be such a struggle. Good luck with whatever you choose. My sister is a perfectly healthy and wonderful preteen despite the formula.

Check out Stanford univ breast feeding site. There is a link to the breastfeding/safe meds list.
I had bad ppd w first, and started meds immediately after birth of second. I feel so much better this time. I was able to take a med which is safe for BF'ing. But if the choice was non-crazy mama (on meds) or ff, I would ff for sure. Your baby needs a happy mama more than anything else. |
