how to prepare my son for major dental work

we are def at a pediatric dentist.
ds is excited to go back to the dentist thankfully. I was brushing his teeth the other night and noticed an abscess just formed so we went right back to the dentist and she prescribed antibiotics and now we are going back on the 13th for gas to have that tooth pulled (one of the originals that were gonna be pulled on the 28th). she said if he is cooperative they will go ahead with the rest of that quadrant (pulpotomy, crown and one filling) if not then it will be taken care of during the 28th appointment.
its awful how one really bad tooth spread to the adjoining ones needing work done. we will definitely be much more diligent after having to go through all this.
