I home birthed both my kiddos and standard procedure here is to go in ten days after the birth to get the testing done. I considered skipping it this time only because my first had such a hard time with it (took forever to get her to bleed) but, really it's well worth the few minutes of crying. Thankfully my second bled well and it was over quickly.

We're declining while in the hospital but will have it done after baby has gotten milk (not colostrum) at most likely the first pedi appointment.

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
The benefits way outweigh the risks as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't decline.
My daughter had hers done at her 2 day appointment. There isn't a point to doing it in the hospital, as someone else said, they need to have some milk in them for it to be useful.

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
I have deviated from standard procedure for many things, nit k shot, eye goop, bath, hospital birth etc. I would never decline this test.

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
Our midwife is very noon traditional and does not see the need for a lot of the extra tests etc but this is like the one thing she seems to really advise you do. Also, she said it had been shown to be more effective done twice, once at 2 days and again at 2 weeks. We just did our 2 day one yesterday and I nursed during and baby girl barely cried at all. Its hard as a mama but definitely worth it in my opinion.

Re: anyone decline the PKU?
I often don't understand why people decline so much testing, but declining the PKU/metabolic testing just seems crazy. I simply don't get it. At our hospital, they do it 48hrs after birth(so right before discharge), then give you the envelope to take to the ped at 2wks. I would never, ever think to decline it. I swear, people just decline stuff because it's a "test" and oh noes, not a test!
