Is Explode the Code good enough for spelling?
I just ordered Explode the Code for my 2 boys and was wondering if that would be good enough for spelling or do I need to supplement for spelling? I also have Handwriting without Tears on the way.

I have really been looking at A Reason for Spelling. I haven't used it, but it looks like a good little program. It is definitely Bible based, though, if that's something you don't prefer. Here is the link with samples:

explode the code is meant to be an aid to phonics instruction. IMO, spelling workout or spelling power are good choices.

Re: Is Explode the Code good enough for spelling?
Explode the Code is phonics based, but has definitely encouraged my daughter to spell. She's been spelling words with fridge magnets, writing words down on paper, and if she sees a word she recognizes, she'll say, "That says ---". I'm planning on ordering A Reason for Spelling for her first grade year, but ETC has helped for sure.

Re: Is Explode the Code good enough for spelling?
honestly, we did spelling without a book. there is already sooo much book work, so i use the Dolch sheet and give words to spell each week. we play silly games with it during the week. But i teach is like "vocabulary words", like schools do. it works very well and I can re-add words that she doesn't learn. Because of this, we move at a quicker pace than most books. Explode the Code was "too" much for me and "A reason for..." has been a disappointment.

Re: Is Explode the Code good enough for spelling?
I know a few people who let ETC serve as their spelling program in the early years. I think it would be fine.
