Maca for adrenal regulation and energy?

I'm just curious as to folks' experience with this supplement. Even if you took it for other purposes like period regulation and libido, I'd be interested to hear about any side effects, difficulties, and pros. It is one of those things I'm thinking of putting on a list to talk to one of my specialist doctors about.

Re: Maca for adrenal regulation and energy?

WebMD notes few, if any, cons, while Livestrong and blog testimonials have some troubling things to say in the mix.

Also if you have any history of thyroid problems, was taking Maca a good or a bad thing for you?

Thanks.

I looked it up. I forget now? It was on a fertility forum.

Re: Maca for adrenal regulation and energy?

Thanks, Keen!

Customer reviews suggest that you start with a small dose and then work up to either the amount recommended by your doctor or on the bottle. Its hormone-regulating properties can apparently be hormone-wacko for some people if they don't go slow (and sometimes even if they do go slow). Maca appears to be used for strength/energy, fertility, libido, hormone regulation (PMS/menopause), and adrenal regulation. From what I've read so far it can help some with hypothyroid (but be problematic for hyperthyroid and maybe for some hypos too?). There are a lot of different compounds in the maca root, and different components may do different things (both a blessing and a curse to have so many components). I'll keep it on my doctor check list and continue listening here if others have something to contribute.

Re: Maca for adrenal regulation and energy?

I took it in a very small amount in Vitanica's Pregnancy Prep. I had a huge increase in appetite (and gained weight), and problems with sleeplessness and jitteryness. Taking the other herbs in that blend were fine. To further confirm it was the Maca, I tried some of my darling's Maca, and it definitely increased my appetite and made me anxious. I read in several places that Maca can be associated with an increase in appetite.

My naturopath is treating me for adrenal fatigue and frequent early miscarriages and has me taking Vitex and a supplement called Drenatropin, she didn't think Maca was a good idea for adrenals.

Re: Maca for adrenal regulation and energy?

My husband and I are currently on a healing journey from pretty intense adrenal fatigue. It's been a hard journey, few things have helped but I must say maca is one of them! My husband suffers severe depression as a side effect of the adrenals, most of the time he doesn't report feeling much change with the things we are doing, but he has consistently said that the maca helps him considerably. It is nourishing to the endocrine system, and it's an adaptogenic, which means it helps the body naturally adapt to things like stress which also helps the adrenals. I have also read that maca is particularly good for men. We use Nutiva brand raw powdered maca. I know it makes a difference what brand you get. Our experience has been that this brand is quality and fresh. Some brands that are not as good contain high levels of metals, including aluminum!! If you are concerned about the maca, try Siberian ginseng (Eleuthero) as it has very similar healing properties. Here is a very helpful link of more info on naturally supporting/healing adrenal fatigue that I found recently. We are starting some of their recommendations with good results.
