St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas and opened in 1962. It is supported primarily by funds from volunteer contributions raised by ALSAC. The national fund-raising organization established by Danny Thomas for the purpose of funding St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. St. Jude also receives assistance from federal grants (mainly through the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute), insurance and investments. St. Jude, located in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the world's premier research centers. The institutions mission is to find cures for children with catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Research efforts are directed at understanding the molecular, genetic and chemical bases of catastrophic diseases in children, identifying cures for such diseases and promoting their prevention. Research is focused specifically on cancers, acquired and inherited immunodeficiencies and genetic disorders. The current basic and clinical research at St. Jude includes work in gene therapy, bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy, the biochemistry of normal and cancerous cells, radiation treatment, blood diseases, resistance to therapy, viruses, hereditary diseases, influenza, pediatric AIDS and psychological effects of catastrophic illnesses.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded on a promise made between two sisters; Susan G. Komen and Nancy Brinker. Suzy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, when it was rarely discussed in public and little was known about the disease. Before she died at the age of 36, Suzy asked her sister to do everything possible to bring an end to breast cancer. Nancy kept her promise by establishing the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982 in Suzy's memory. Over twenty years later, the Komen Foundation is a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of innovative research and community-based outreach programs. Working through a network of U.S. and international Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure events, the Komen Foundation is fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by funding research grants, supporting education, screening and treatment projects in communities around the world, and delivering the life-saving message of early detection to hundreds of thousands of women and men. Today, we celebrate the power of a promise and how a single person's vision can make a difference in the lives of millions.

A 7-year-old boy named Chris Greicius, who dreamed of becoming a police officer for a day, inspired the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Officers of the Arizona highway patrol made his wish come true on April 29, 1980. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is funded primarily through corporate and private donations. Autism Coalition for Research and Education, Inc.
What: The Coalition is a non-profit tax exempt association of nationally recognized autism organizations and support groups that endeavor to collaborate on fundraising projects that will finance crucial autism research and educational services. The Autism Coalition will act as an organizational hub, efficiently leveraging the combined resources of its members and accelerating the fundraising process for essential biomedical and applied research. Who: The Autism Society of America, the ASA foundation, Cure Autism Now, the National Alliance for Autism Research, the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation and other established non-profit organizations are the founding members of this consortium. These established groups represent the backbone and guiding lights for biomedical research, political activism and act as public awareness engines for the autism community and the public at large. Why: By communicating with one voice, the goals and needs of the autism community, our maximum fundraising potential will be achieved. By cross-referencing and aggregating the community's resources this consortium can attain exponentially superior financial results and a higher level of public awareness. Our objective is to achieve the visibility and financial success commensurate with causes that may be better known but are certainly not more deserving than autism. The Autism Coalition believes the children, adults and their families, who are saddled with this misunderstood disorder, deserve a concerted and effective effort that will speed the research process and make the possibility of a cure in their lifetime a reality. How: We endeavor to weave a fully encompassing network, both inside and out of the autism community and leveraging that network to produce unprecedented results. Utilizing nationally coordinated fundraising initiatives with appeals to both corporate and public America through extensive use of all available mediums.
