Re: Does anyone make there own curriculum?

It depends on what you mean by "make your own curriculum". There are plenty of moms here that unschool or child led learn with no curriculum or very little curriculum. With my youngest I have been just picking up books that I think are worth while and reading them to him, insisting that he read a book to me and then using a math program that I chose based on the fact that I could make it very hands on. Many days we use manipulatives and a book on learning with unifix cubes for math instead. That is our "curriculum". For last year my oldest son used a pieced together curriculum so it wasn't boxed. It wasn't hard to put together at all, just took a little time to research. For this year I am using Charlotte Mason mostly from Ambleside Online but I have had to do some pretty big alteration to make it work. It fits very well with what I am doing with my youngest.

Re: Does anyone make there own curriculum?

We unschool, but on occasion my dd likes to do unit studies that I make up (ok, mostly I copy crafts & other ideas from other moms online & then get a ton of books about the topic from the library).
As a public school spec Ed teacher, I made up most of my own curriculum too. Not hard, just takes time.

If you don't want to buy a boxed curriculum but just want to gather your own books & workbooks if u want to go that route, you can pick & choose from different curriculums to out together your own unique one too, but that's made of bits & pieces of other things. You can also get those "grade one complete curriculum" type workbooks at SAMs club & use that as your book work but supplement with real stories, audio books, board games, videos, nature walks, etc.

Re: Does anyone make there own curriculum?

I've been doing my own this year. I made some of it up entirely myself... some worksheets, some projects that I just dreamed up randomly. Most of it however is pieced-together material from various internet sources. I get a lot from education.com, worksheets.com, brainpop and brainpop jr, discovery online streaming, etc.

Last summer, I downloaded and printed the standards for my state for first grade. I wanted a copy so that I could follow along and make sure I didn't leave any major gaps or anything. So I've just kind of gone through those (not necessarily in order) this year. If it says that 1st graders need to learn about biomes, I start googling and I put together a few weeks worth of work (most of it from free sources) and we go to town on it.

Re: Does anyone make there own curriculum?

I don't exactly write my own but I pull free curriculum from different sites. Like DD1 spelling reading comp 36 weeks came from http://www.k12reader.com her grammar came from http://www.sfreading.com/resources/ghb.html which is also free. We get a lot of activities and seasonal work sheets from education.com. I get a lot of free stuff off of teachers pay teachers.
