iPad is 100% intuitive, while a DSLR camera is not (unless you're already familiar with photography... And not just "point and shoot" type cameras). I have both (iPad for 18 months, Nikon D3100 for 4) and while I could pull the iPad out of the box, charge it, then get to play/work, I am still having to read up on my Nikon because it is NOT intuitive for me. My photos are still mediocre (even on "auto") and I know it'll take loads more practice and time to get better.

I would take the amount of time it'll take you to master the device in to consideration. I would also weigh how many photos will you be taking and would a less expensive "point and shoot" accomplish what you want it to. Ultimately, only you can decide this, but I'd chose an iPad (and I do have a MacBook Pro as well as the iPad... So even with some "duplicity" in function, I wouldn't give up one over the other).

To me, if you want the gift only for you, the camera, if you want the whole family to benefit, the iPad. Me personally, I would go for the iPad, there is a lot more flexibility to take pics, video, apps, teaching etc...

Another vote for a camera. DSLRs are amazing. It takes very little no how to capture really great pictures.

I agree. I had only ever used point & shoots, but I was able to use my DSLR (Canon Rebel) right out of the box, after charging it! Even with knowing almost NOTHING about it, I was able to take better pictures than with my previous camera.

Camera. You can get great tablets for $200ish, but not a dslr.

This. I would go with the camera. If you really want an iPad you can always check out the apple refurbished section for a deal.

What a great choice but if you have a computer then go for the camera its a must when you have kids.

Have you looked at the prices? Is there anyway you can get a cheaper tablet & camera for the same amount as your dad intends to spend?
