Pattern licensing question...

I have a pattern that i would like to use to make and sell items from but it requires you apply for a license... Is this just for using the name along with it or can you just not sell items made from the pattern...

I have ice cube trays from ikea that say 'water only' on them. Does this make my juice ice cubes illegal somehow?
I want to say that the same idea applies to your pattern. The pictures in the pattern may be copyrighted and the name, but patterns aren't generally copyrightable, no matter what they print on them or say on a website. Unless you specifically agreed somewhere that you wouldn't sell any items you made using it maybe.

Here's a website with more information on the subject.

Good luck!

What she said. Lots of WAHMs like to think that if they create a pattern then they have some right to determine who can or cannot sell things made with that pattern but it's not true. The pattern itself cannot be reproduced and sold, but items made with it are fair game. The pattern is just like an instruction sheet, and things created based on instructions are considered separate creations.

Yea for education! I'm always so glad to see this issue so clear and unmuddied.

I always tell people that what pattern makers try to claim would be like a blueprint maker trying to tell someone what they can and can't do with their house once it's erected. Pretty absurd, right?

WOW. That link totally blew my mind! I completely bought into the idea that you can't sell things made from a pattern. I appreciate that they link to sources. Although, now I should check those sources, just to be safe!
