Breastfeeding while pregnant. EXTREME Nipple Pain?

I am 34 weeks pregnant. DS#2 has nursed all the way through my pregnancy. I have no supply but basically he just nurses to fall asleep at night using me as a paci lol. Ever since about the 12 week it hurts enough to almost bring me to tears. I have been thinking it would stop but it just keeps getting worse. With another baby coming right around the corner I am just wondering if this is normal and other people have experienced it or if its something I need to treat before the new baby like a yeast infection. My nipples are so tender they can't be touched and when he latches on it is a shooting pain that brings me to my knees. I don't really remember it being this bad with my previous pregnancies, anyone have any experience/ advice/ suggestions? Thanks!

No experience and no advice. My sister had the same issues though. She finally chose to wean as she just couldn't take the pain anymore.

Did it get better after birth?

After birth I am sure it would have but she didn't make it past 20 weeks pregnancy before she just couldn't handle the pain anymore. Her painful nipples were also comlicated by a biting toddler. Her daughter would nurse as she slept and would bite in her sleep if my sister tried to unlatch her. Between the sore pregnancy nipples and biting she just couldn't handle it anymore.

I imagine you will have normal post pregnancy pain or perhaps even skip that altogether if you continue nursing. I just don't know what to do to help with the current pain as I think it is hormone related and possibly the lack of milk. I know when I am dry it hurts when baby continues to nurse.

I had the same issues. I ended up stopping around 20 weeks because I couldn't bear the pain anylonger. I think it was because I dried up. But, even after stopping, I'm still in a lot of pain daily. My boobs just hurt, and I'm currently about 26 weeks pregnant.

I had the same issue with mine. I weaned when I dried up at 20 weeks. My nipples were fine when the next baby came along.

The nipple pain tends to be hormonal, but can be something else.

Having nursed through 2 pregnancies, I will say, if it is just hormonal, it gets SO much better after baby is born. You may deal with normal soreness after the new baby arrives, but it will get better if it isn't something like yeast.

You could also try a lanolin nipple cream.

If you aren't sure if it is yeast, you can try natural things to treat it and see if it makes any difference.

Natural options: probiotics
yogurt (applied to the nipples)
grapefruit seed extract (both topically and internally)

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant. EXTREME Nipple Pain?

Dd nursed through her second pg and is now tandem nursing a 21mo and 4mo. Weaning just wasn't really an option because dgs was pretty young, and VERY attached (he has also bonded very well with his little sister with tandem nursing whereas I think there would've been a LOT of jealousy issues if he couldn't nurse and she was).

Anyway, back on subject, I DO know dd experienced some painful times, but after the baby was born all was fine, and she never had any engorgement issues thanks to the nursing toddler!
