Vitamin - how to give?

Started my son on dha fish oil... Recommended dosage is 2ml, which is crazy - two eyedroppers filled to the brim! He's six months old, EBF and we've been sticking the dropper into his mouth and squirting little by little. He doesnt seem to mind, but he thinks its a game and delights over spitting half the liquid back out and laughing. So far I'd say he swallows about 1 ml and spits out the rest.

Is there a better way to do this?

I put his vitamin D directly on my nipple before feeding, but I can't put that much fish oil on.

Re: Vitamin - how to give?

I am sorry I am no help with how to get medicine in a baby let alone vitamins. My kiddo runs the instant he sees signs of medicine. Once we catch him he starts spitting violently to prevent any from getting into him. He refuses to swallow until it is all out of his mouth.

I am wondering though why you need to be giving vitamins and fish oil to a 6 month old? Does he have health issues?

Re: Vitamin - how to give?

We used to put a drop on his pacifier, and he would take it. Since then he has been weaned, we use the direct drop from the D-Drop bottle. It is a little struggle though, 'cause by the time the drop comes out of the bottle, DS is already bored of keeping his mouth open and wants to move. We are planning to get a dropper if this thing doesn't work out.

He doesn't have health issues, but the pediatrician suggested it when we told him he wasn't on cereals yet. He said babies need iron and dha for brain development and has been pushing cereal since he was four months old. I wasn't ready to do that per WHO recs so thought this would be a nice comprimise.

Not really working out though. He just started clamping his mouth shut at the sight of the dropper!

Maybe sucking on the dropper? That's how we've done teething med in the past...

Dropper to the back of the cheek and blow in the face.

But I think your doc is kind of behind, we never did cereal or filler food.

Re: Vitamin - how to give?

We never gave our baby any vitamins. If you're breastfeeding him, I would think that if YOU take the DHA/fish oil (and DHA is already in many prenatals, which you should still be taking anyway), it would be passed to him. No need to struggle giving him the dropperfuls of liquid!

Re: Vitamin - how to give?

I think I remember reading somewhere that because formula has so many vitamins many, including doctors feel breastfed babies also need the additional vitamins. In reality though the article said the reason formula was so high in vitamins was because babies didn't absorb all the vitamins. In breastmilk the amount is lower but the baby absorbs most of it. So in the end both formula and breastfed babies are getting the right amount of vitamins despite appearances otherwise.

It's way easier if you take it (it's good for you too!) and nurse him. Expecta is what I took because it's fish-free. I can't handle fishy-smelling anything at all, it gives me instant nausea.
