Think i have mastitis :(

Woke up last night freezing (it is over 100 degrees last 6 days!) & chills/shaking uncontrollably for hours. My body aches all over but ESP my pelvis, chest & mid back. Even my skin hurts when blankets touch it. I am super weak.

My breasts are sore (left more than right) but no distinct lumps. Also no fever. Left nipple hurts really bad when baby feeds but right seems ok.

MD giving me antibiotics but I wish I could know 100% that it is mastitis because I hate antibiotics

Sounds like it. I am sorry you need to take meds. I hope you feel better soon.

Re: Think i have mastitis :(

It could just be a plugged duct that you could try treating without antibiotics. Did it come on suddenly or gradually? Most likely, suddenly = infection. Gradually = plugged duct. But not necessarily.
I have had those same symptoms and treated them by dropping everything and going to have a bath, as hot as I can stand. Try massaging the breast where it is sore to get the milk moving out of that area. After bath, nurse baby on that side with chin pointing towards sore area (this may require some acrobatics - lay baby on the bed and hover over on all fours if you need to). Then, go to bed/lay on the couch until you feel better. Don't get up unless you absolutely must. Nurse as much as possible. Recovery for me following this has always been fairly quick but if you let it get worse you may be down for a lot longer.
But if the sore nipple has pus coming from it, that needs to be looked at by your doc.
Taking ibuprofen for the pain is ok.

Re: Think i have mastitis :(

I never had a fever, but plugged up quite often. I wore double the support with lots of massaging and used a heating pad. I also pumped after nursing on the plugged side to encourage release of the duct.
