My supply drops quickly

Once I'm off both lactation cookies AND nursing teas, my supply drops by 2-3 ounces. I haven't had time to make more lactation cookies so I've been doing the teas only and instead of pumping 6-8 oz while at work, I am back to getting only 3-4, if I'm lucky.

I am making sure to have a diet rich in calories that are good for me. I drink tons of water (definitely more than a gallon a day) and I pump 2-3 times in a 9 hour period.

My baby is 8 months and nurses only when I'm home. She never takes more than 2 oz per feeding when I'm gone, so I am short about one feeding now.

Does this mean that I will always have to eat lactation cookies and drink nursing teas daily to maintain my supply until my baby becomes more reliant on solids???

Sounds like the problem is your pumping and not your supply per se.

Whenever someone starts having problems pumping, I always suggest replacing all the "replaceable" pump parts. Pumps just aren't as efficient as babies.

Also, have you see this: newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/MaxProduction.html

"hands on pumping" has been proven to increase pump output.

Finally, yes, sometimes the only way to pump enough is to take herbs to boost your supply. If lactation cookies were helping, you could also try eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning (and possibly again as a bed time snack).

Thank you for that! My parts all seem to fit snugly, so I didn't think that was the problem. I will try to buy new tubing anyways though.

I have been trying the oatmeal as well we brewers yeast tablets until I can make more cookies.

ETA: I just got new tubes and new flanges. Not the pump. I have been pumping since she was 3 weeks and I am getting less than I was when my supply was first establishing.

Have you tried fenugreek caps? It makes you smell funny, but to me it's better than cookies. I don't need the extra calories...

I take those but they give me an upset stomach and make my daughter gassy, so I stick to the nursing teas and the cookies. Blessed Thistle and goat's rue have the same effect on my stomach and my daughter's toots.

Any chance your cycles are returning? I notice a dip in supply prior to AF. Google "psyllium husk" and bfing. It helped me.

Re: My supply drops quickly

No sign of my cycle just yet. I even tried a manual pump over the weekend. I hardly get anything and my daughter still needs at least 4-5 oz, which means I pump and nurse on the other side just to reach 4 oz.

I have even aimed for a much healthier diet, meaning no processed junk at all (usually allow myself one serving) that is much higher in healthier fats and protein.

Hoping my supply increases after I have 10 lactation cookies after work.

Possibility of tongue tie? We didn't get dd2 diagnosed until 6 months and we struggled terribly. Every new galactagogues would cause an increase and nice she couldn't extract my supply dropped again.

She does have a lip tie but no tongue tie. I had 2 doctors look at it (one plastic surgeon who was against clipping it) and then a dentist who said we could laser it off but that it wasn't extremely necessary since she was on track with weight gain and I had no pain from nursing her.

I have the same problem if I run out of fenugreek or mothers milk tea or don't eat my oatmeal for I've come to the conclusion that I need these things to successfully breastfed. I suffer from hypothyroidism and PCOS so that I know what's causing the problem. Maybe you could eat oatmeal everyday instead of the cookies. I feel like I'm having dessert every morning because I load it up with ground flax seeds, cinnamon, maple syrup or dark brown sugar and fruit. Then I have a hard boiled egg and take my fenugreek. Can you tolerate any fenugreek? Maybe you could sprinkle a little in the oatmeal. Raw nuts seem to help my supply out a lot too and it's a healthy fat so good for you. Good luck n
