How high above the slots cna you go RF?

I was looking at a SureRide since I've been debating getting a lighter seat to travel with. I tried my little guy in it at BRU. He's 30" tall and long in the torso so his shoulders are currently about an inch or so above the highest RF slots. So fine right now. But I want to get a see that will last a while too. So how far above the slots is still considered safe?

There is no "too far" as long as he still has at least 1" of hard shell above his head.

I see you are in Canada. We can only use the bottom 3 slots in Canada. That said as long as they are below it is fine. My almost 5 year old can still fit comfortably rear facing at 35lbs and 38inches. She doesn't use the seat all the time as it is my sons seat and she is FF normally but occasionally she likes it and is still within the limits.

I thought you also had to worry about the straps slipping off their shoulders? Doesn't matter for us as DD is about 40 lbs anyway.

My oldest was rear facing in a SureRide until last week. When he had to go and grow on me. 39" in November 41" in January his shoulders are about .5" below the 4th slot so the 3rd slot was way below his shoulders at least 3-4" the straps never slid off and he was comfortable rear facing

Re: How high above the slots cna you go RF?

In the end I decided against the Sureride... I really like the seat but with us only being able to use the lower slots rear facing in Canada and the fact that my little guy was already well over the highest rf one at 10 months I figured by the time we were ready to turn he could potentially be more like 6+ inches above them and that just doesn't seem safe to me. I did some more research on car-seat.org and this is a recognized issue for tall/long torsoed kids. I might consider it again in a few years when he's FF though because of the 54" height limit for that.
