Zyrtec...side effects question

If you have ever had your kiddos on zyrtec, did you notice any behavioral or mood changes?

Re: Zyrtec...side effects question

We are a house of allergic people and 4/6 of our kids take Zyrtec daily. Although they are sensitive to "cold" medicine and get very wired the Zyrtec has never been as issue. Every kid is different though. You might try Claritin instead or try a 1/2 does of Zyrtec. Per our Pedi's advice we do that and have not found it any less effective.

Re: Zyrtec...side effects question

Not a kid, but Zyrtec has exacerbated depression for me. I also found it to be listed as a side effect on the Pfizer website. I kept using it because it was the only thing that worked, and I think my body adjusted eventually because I don't really notice the mood change anymore.

Re: Zyrtec...side effects question

My kiddo has been on Zyrtec for about 6 months now. No side effects that I've noticed.

Re: Zyrtec...side effects question

My boys and I all take generic Zyrtec (we've done over the counter as well) and never noticed any side effects what so ever. I actually find Allegra more effective but now that I take topirimate for epilepsy and bipolar I find that Allegra causes heart issues and can't take it (or risk my youngest taking it as he is on the same med). I don't find Claritin effective at all.

Both of my girls take Zyrtec and have for years. The only difference I've noticed is they do fall asleep better than before they took it. They take 2 tsp every night before bed.

Just jumping back on here to share my experience, just in case someone else is also having trouble with this. I appreciate all of the replies.

Our son was on zyrtec. Started it over xmas break. Went back to school and was a totally different kid. Grouchy, sour, aggravated all the time. His teacher noticed as well. I even tried taking him to the ped to have his iron checked (he has had low iron in the past). Changed his sleep schedule. Tried naps, no naps, short naps. Tried cutting certain foods. Tried a reward chart. Nothing. Got to asking around and looking online and many other moms posted similar experiences. Oddly, many of them had boys. I ended up taking him off of it and it was like night and day. I mean, hes 4. I dont expect him to never tantrum or act stubborn..but this was totally out of character. Anyway. He is doing fine off of it but if seasonal allergies are an issue next year, we will try something else.

Fwiw, my best friend has both of her girls on it and neither have issues. I think everyone responds differently to meds/foods/etc.

Re: Zyrtec...side effects question

My two youngest take it without issue. I cannot though. I was taking it and had no energy, no motivation to do anything and just felt blah. Dd2 took singulair when she was younger and went from quiet and sweet to off the wall and naughty. Took me a month to figure out it was the meds! Worst month ever! I got my sweet, well behaved child back when she stopped taking it.
All the allergy meds seem to work differently for different people and that goes for the side effects too.
