Pregnancy & Neurontin (gabapentin)

Has anyone HAD to be on it and be pregnant? I am thinking I might be pregnant (NOT planned) and I am on 600mg of Neurontin 1x/day for abdominal nerve pain. I know it is used as a mood stabilizer, a nerve pain medication, and for epilepsy.

Anyone been on it or is on it now?

Feed your children human milk as long as possible, it might save their life. It did my son's.

Stop taking it and call your dr to let them know. I take 400mg daily when not pregnant to treat neuropathy but it is not safe in pregnancy.

It has been known to cause kidney and heart malformation and facial deformities. I took it into my 6th week though and dr said it was probably ok because at that point the placenta is still forming.

I generally just deal with the pain in pregnancy I don't know that there is a safer alternative.

I started it back at 6 weeks post partum while breastfeeding but at a lower dose after consulting the 2012 medication and mothers milk book. Which references some studies that show the transfer rate is not high but also not necessarily safe for me the need for pain relief out weighed the risk and we saw no changes in my son with its use during breastfeeding.

My DS2 is still nursing. My pain management doctor said it is ok while nursing. I should talk to him ASAP then.

Oh and my pain is severe. I was on Norco but it wasn't helping my pain at all. This pain isn't something I can live through. It is hard enough to deal with it when the meds wear off or "breakthrough".

Neurontin is a big no-no... Category D, I think. Call your doctor asap.

I took it for seizures. I took a very low dose. Not to scare you because they never told me it was linked to the medicine but my 42 weeker was born not breathing. It took him a few min to come around and he spent his first week of life in a nicu. I was told it was fine to take amd took it through the whole pregnancy . Hes now a healthy normal 5 year old. My midwife believes there may have been a connection but none of the drs were willing to say either way.
