Question about Thrush
My son was just on antibiotics twice because of ear infections and I know have thrush again. I have some diflucan refills but until I can get it I bought monistat cream. I know my doctor mentioned it before but does anyone know if I can nurse with it on my nipples. How often to apply it??

Re: Question about Thrush
I don't believe you can nurse with it on your nipples. You can go to webmd.com and find other ways to relieve the thrush. Acidophilus is one if I remember correctly. Thrush sucks! GL mama

Re: Question about Thrush
Didn't I read a post about using vinegar on nipples.
Anyone else. Hear this? or tried it? Maybe you can avoid the whole cream question. ![]() I used Gentian Violet. COOL!!!! Purple is my color! ![]() Wish I had read about the vinegar first.

I have used vinegar and also rinsed with baking soda...its not working. Wondering how often and how long it will take before it starts clearing up?? About the gentian violet, how often did you apply it? Where did you purchase it? My husband is looking online and is wondering if its gentian root?

Re: Question about Thrush
You can get gentian violet at most pharmacy's but you have to ask them for it, it's not out on the shelves at most places. Usually theys ay apply about 3 times a day to your nipple and nurse immediately afterwards. You should be topless and the babe either naked or in something you don't care about because it will stain.
Also start taking probiotics ASAP. You can give it to the baby too. They have powder form and liquid capsules. You can sprinkle it directly in the babies mouth as well as you taking it yourself.

Re: Question about Thrush
My midwife prescribed a mix of monistat (to kill the yeasty beasties), hydrocortizone (for the itching), and polysporin (to help with infection). But make sure if you're using any kind of cream like this on your nipples that you wash it off before you nurse. I'd always apply it after I nursed, and then wipe off my nipples with a wet washcloth right before nursing.
Though ultimately for me, the gentian violet is what did the trick to get rid of the yeast. Like a pp said, you can get it over the counter at any pharmacy, but most of them don't carry it in stock and you have to special order it. And though effective, it is MESSY stuff. HTH.
