Re: Pregnant and overweight?

Don't let a little weight stop you. I was way overweight by 100lb and had no issues while pregnant or during delivery.

Re: Pregnant and overweight?

personaly I don't think 40lbs is too much, unless you are 4'11 lol then it may just be too much extra weight.

I was 200lbs when I got pg with Dorian, then I gained 60lbs durring my pg, Yikes!
in June of 05' I joined Weight Watchers weighing in at a whoping 213lbs. I got down to 179lbs before I got pg with this baby in December, so I am still clearly 40lbs over weight (Ideal weight is 140lbs) but I felt great for losing that weight and I figured since I was quite a bit lighter with this pg then my first I would do fine.

I do plan to go back to WW and get down to 140lbs after our baby girl is born.

I really think 40lbs is nothing but you know your physical limits and if you think you could carry a baby and look afer your other kids well then I say go for it.

Re: Pregnant and overweight?

Just wanted to say that I was thinking last night that I was glad I had lost the weight (about 30lbs) before getting pregnant again...since I'll be carrying twins (still trying to absorb the shock of that one! LOL) it means my body has that much less to deal with, kwim?

I'm sure whichever way you choose, it will work out great!

Re: Pregnant and overweight?

Haven't read the other responses but figured I'd put in my anyway. Of course you should talk with your doctor but I was overweight both times I got pregnant and have not had any problems as a result of that. I'm a big girl anyway (almost 6', just over 200 pounds not pregnant) and struggle with my weight so I figured I'd be one of those people to gain 100 pounds with each pregnancy and never lose it! With my first, I lost weight until about halfway through my second tri and then started gaining pretty fast. The highest I ever went was about 15 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight and the day after my son was born, I weighed almost 10 pounds less than pre-pregnancy! And over the next year and a half, I kept that weight off and lost a little more! Things are still shaped a little differently than they were before and I don't think I'm as fit (endurance, etc.) as I was before pregnancy, but the weight is down! This pregnancy has gone about the same. I started out losing weight and now at 30+ weeks, I'm about 4 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight. I have had a harder time with this pregnancy in general, but none of it is directly related to my weight. I haven't had GD with either one, no blood pressure problems (in fact, my bp is scares me because it's so low!), nothing like that. Yes, I'm exhausted all the time, get winded easily, etc., but I'm 7 months pregnant and chasing a toddler (and working full time and practically a single mother) so I think I'd be tired even if I wasn't overweight. I think a lot of it is just hardwired into your system. One of my cousins is very slim and athletic and yet she gained almost 70 pounds with her first baby. She lost most of it pretty quickly afterwards, but that was her personality and lifestyle. I know another woman who is very obese (~5'1, 200+) and carried two babies full term with no problems. She didn't gain any significant amount of weight with either one and never looked pregnant, but everyone was healthy. In fact, she was probably watching what she ate and taking better care of herself while she was pregnant than any other time and as a result, she actually felt better while she was pregnant.

Good luck with whatever works out for you...

Re: Pregnant and overweight?

With my first I was of healthy weight and gained 30 lbs, lost it within 2 weeks. With my dd I was about 15 lounds or so overweight and again gained 30 lbs (with the help of bi weekly steriod injections and hormone treatments to keep her in and growing). I was very upset that 2 1/2 years after having her I was still the same weight as I was at my 6 week checkup (about 40lbs overweight). I tried to lose weight as I wanted to try for #3 and thought "why?". I mean I am going to gain weight with the pregnancy then have to work again to get it off, what if I needed more steroid and hormones? So we started trying and my doc said "don't worry about the weight, you'll use what you have before you gain". 11 months after trying I got pregnant and am now 25 weeks along. I look very preggers (not chunky like I thought I would) but am now all baby, only gained 6lbs so far and I can still fit into my prepregnancy jeans (under the belly of course). The doc said I am doing great and should only put on about 15 or so pounds total making it not so hard. Just eat healthy and walk, your body will use up what it has first.

I'm right there with you. I'm about 30-35lbs overweight. Here's how I see it I can loose the weight when I'm finished having kids. I had GD with both of my dc (my first I was not overweight when I got pg and the GD was worse than with my second)BUT diabetes runs in my family. I lost weight while I was pg and weighed 8lbs heavier when I delivered than when I got pg with my last.
I say go for it!!! I wouldn't let the weight stop you from adding another joy to your life!!!

Re: Pregnant and overweight?

I was also overweight with all three babies. I never had GD and in fact had good low numbers. With each of my babes I lost weight initially and then went on to gain about 25 pounds each time. I lost most of it each time too, and am now focused on losing about 45 pounds- which is my TTC #4 goal. Your OB might just tell you to really watch what you eat and gain slowly, or very little.

Re: Pregnant and overweight?

I was over 200# with all of my pgs. I ONLY lose weight if I dont eat at all or if I'm pg, thats it!. I never had trouble ttc or staying pg until we started ttc #3 and it wasnt related to my weight. I never had BP issues or GD. In fact, other than being overweight, I'm pretty darn healthy
