It could weaken the webbing to have it completly submerged in water, or swished around in the washer. I would call the seat manufacturer and ask them if they think you need to replace your harness. Some people also will iron their straps thinking it will help them not be so twist (cosco seats have twisty straps), this could also damage them with the heat. Call the company and see what they say. As tech's we are told to tell parents to only spot clean the harneses if they get dirty.

Thanks...I'll check into that. I have a Graco infant seat and Britax Marathon that both came as hand-me-downs from a close friend (so I know they haven't been in any crashes or anything) but they were dusty from sitting in the garage so I took off everything that would come off and ran it through the washer. Then with the reflux and exploding sippy cups, etc., I've washed them a couple of more times since then...never imagined it would be a problem...I'm glad I saw this thread!

I know my instructions for my marathon state not to put the harness in a washer. I don't think replacement harnesses cost more then maybe $10. Customer service for both Britax and graco should be able to help you. I am glad you saw this post also

I don't mean to hijack, but could that be why my dd's comes loose all the time? The straps I mean?

hehe...don't worry about the hijack!

we ended machine washing, still stank, and then sprayed with febreeze. is much better now! (oh, and had to clean out stuff that got WAY under the seats, loaded it up with baking soda, and then vacuumed)

I am not sure, is it that you tighten them so they are flat against your daughter (you shouldn't be able to pinch any webbing with your fingers) and when you go to get her out they are not tight anymore? How loose are they becomming? What seat do you have?, and how old is your daughter?
