I might buy a cheapie tractphone for him when he goes to dad's but not at that age for school. My oldest got one at 10 yo but he uses it to call or text me his blood sugar while away from me.

Re: Hear me out - what age to give a child a cell phone?

I said no. But, I forgot about those programmable ones. If you could get the one to use in an emergency where he could only call your, or his dad or some other person you agree on, maybe that. Otherwise, I'm thinking DD will be 12 before she gets one.

I personally would not get my kids a phone that young (and likely not until they are pre teens at the earliest).

I your situation, I would in a heartbeat. My friend bought one for her daughter at 6 for visitation at dads and it meant she could call mom whenever she wanted.

Re: Hear me out - what age to give a child a cell phone?

I think I might get him something he can use while at biodads. I wouldn't leave it in his backpack - his school may have rules about electronics and phones in the classroom. Also, I wouldn't trust it not to get lost or pulled out at school. Honestly the kindergarten teacher has enough going on, she doesn't need to add cell phone to her list.

For just a run of the mill situation, I think five is too young.

For a joint custody situation where there's no home phone in the other home, yes I would get one.

Re: Hear me out - what age to give a child a cell phone?

I voted no.

If biodad is not communicating out of spite, or because he's trying to hide something from you then giving your son a cell phone won't help. Biodad can just take it away from him.

If biodad isn't communicating because he's flaky, but otherwise things are okay when your son visits, then there's really no reason he would need a cell phone.

At school, on the bus, 5 is way too young.

That's something that needs to be handled through the courts, and the responsibility of the phone or calling shouldn't be put on the 5yo

ETA: I would give a 5 year old a phone as long as I could regulate who they could call. And lock any way to purchase apps too. DS1 is 4 and he can use our phones easily.

^That's what I was thinking of.

I told my children that when they could pay the bill, they could have a phone. That probably won't be until they are about 16. I didn't have one til I was 16 and could pay the bill (they were just starting to come out with pre-paids...I had a trac fone.) Before that there was a pay phone when i was done with my color guard, or the leader had a cell phone. It all worked out fine.
