Help for articles that speak against weaning cold turkey unless medically necessary

I am on another list that is supposed to be devoted to breastfeeding. A mama was wondering if she should just cold turkey wean her 13 month old. Well, when describing the circumstances she said that she had a UTI and was on ciproflaxin and had read that ciproflaxin wasn't good for nursing moms. So she said she didn't nurse the night before, and she felt bad because her dd screamed and screamed and screamed. She said she felt horrible about it, but didn't know what to do. She said she was probably just going to stop nursing cold turkey, but she wanted to know our thoughts. So I said that she should look into a different antiobiotic, and it sounded like her DD wasn't ready to give up nursing. I also said that cold turkey weaning could cause trauma to her LO.

So another poster comes back and says what I said was going overboard, and she needed to do what was best for her. Basically, the impression I got is she was saying to do what was best for her and not her LO. I was like ARGH! So I simply said that I do not think what I said was overboard and weaning anything cold turkey could be traumatic including bottle weaning. I told her to read on drsears.com.

I was wondering though if anyone knew of any articles on how cold turkey weaning was not good for LO's. I mean even most pedi's that I've been around suggest weaning a bit at a time unless it's absolutely medically necessary to wean immediately, and I know these kinds of things are rare. So help me, mamas! I know there have to be some articles out there that are good ones!

I don't know of any specific articles, but you could try reading through the Kellymom section on weaning:

You can also stress the physical difficulties for the mother is she quits cold turkey - at best, it'd be very uncomfortable. At worst, she could get plugged ducts or mastitis.

Thanks! I actually got a lot of really good responses on a few of the yahoogroups I am on. The mama that told me I was going overboard never said another word after a few other mamas told her I was right. She basically just shut it down. That made me feel a LOT better.
