Water for toddler constipation?

Does water really help relieve constipation?

If not, do you know of a natural, gentle, non-sugary way (ie. fruit juice gives him a yeast infection)? He is almost a year old. I gave him pear juice diluted 1/2 and 1/2 with water yesterday, about 4oz total, and he got a monster diaper rash.

He's not terribly constipated but is straining and crying and fussing.

I'm pretty sure you ladies will have better ideas then our Dr.

Re: Water for toddler constipation?

Okay the pediatrician thought that one of the boys was constipated so she recommended juice. I don't like to give them juice often though because it causes them to poop 3-5 times a day. I typically stick with milk and water for them on a daily basis. Anyway, the pediatrician said that if the juice didn't work (I knew it would), but if it didn't that we would try Colace. It is a non stimulant laxative that isn't absorbed into your system....it stays in the intestines. It is actually safe during pregnancy too. Maybe you could call the pediatrician or your pharmacist and they could give you some recommendations or give you dosage recommendations for Colace or something similar. I've called my pharmacist several times when I have medical questions and my dr office is closed. They're really knowledgeable and helpful.

Re: Water for toddler constipation?

Our DD gets easily consitpated when she eats bananas, cheese, or drinks juice. She is also is "lazy pooper"- meaning that she is too busy to go poop and would rather hold it till she gets constipated. So, a few things that have helped her stay regular:

Flax oil (mixed into her yogurt)- this REALLY helps!!!!
cookes with lots of flax seed meal
apples
prunes
apricots
peaches

And I make sure that she does drink LOTS of water through out the day.

Re: Water for toddler constipation?

Thanks ladies. I think the water is helping - my dad suggested it to me awhile ago which is why I wasn't sure if it would really help (I love my dad, but he's not an infant expert lol).

It's frustrating because we are so limited - no dairy products, no soy, no table foods at all (gag reflux), and no fruit (yeast infection). I'll try flax on his cereal if this doesn't work.
