Could this be true? Swine flu related...

A friend of mine went to the doc who told her two things about swine flu:

1. it is the only flu circulating right now.
2. it can present as cold symptoms with a fever.

has anyone else heard this? if it's true then my 2yo has swine flu! he has been on and off with a fever for the past week but has been constant with the cough, runny nose, fatigue part since then.

I believe both are true, I know for sure the 2nd is. IIRC the swine flu overtakes the regular flu virus.

Hmm, interesting. My son and daughter both have colds right now, getting over them though but Nikolas spiked a fever last night. I am totally NOT freaking out but I am going to do some research.

ETA: Oh and we all had a 12-24 hour stomach bug (except Kate, throwing up, fever) the week before last. Hmmm.

Re: Could this be true? Swine flu related...

Where I live, 97% of flu cases have been the H1N1 variety in the past month. The seasonal flu could still take off once we get into the winter though. Seasonal flu cases are pretty few and far between this time of year anyway. We usually don't see so many cases of the flu in August and September. Not sure about the second question. I think it is usually presenting with fever and serious fatigue and body aches.

let me know what you find. i'm not worried because he seems to be fairing well, he's not vomiting or anything and the fever is pretty on/off but i think that would be wacky...

the swine flu may overtake the regular flu, but it doesn't overtake other illness....so it may be the only flu circulating right now, but it certainly isn't the only illness

i'm not a doc, but there's just no way that every single runny nose is the swine flu

Just keep in mind that H1N1 is just another type of flu bug. The hype has been phenomenal, but just as many at risk people (elderly, infants, those with compromised immune systems) get seriously ill with the regular flu every year.

Sounds to me like your LO could just have a common cold. H1N1 could be the only flu circulating where your friend lives or the only cases her doctor has seen, but it can be very different even 50kms away! And remember that most kids who have regular cold or flu symptoms would not be seeing a doctor so they wouldn't be on his radar.

Re: Could this be true? Swine flu related...

This CDC link has some good info, IMO. We are hunkering down and staying home unless it looks like he needs to go be seen, just like we would with anything else. He seems to be doing just fine and honestly I am not convinced one way or the other about it being swine flu.

I am fighting his fever from the inside first. Cold foods, drinks...and then from the outside. Cool baths, light clothes. I think a fever has it's reason and I don't give meds to bring it down. Last night it was only 100.7 so it wasn't even that bad.

Hope some of that helps. Hyland's Cold and Cough seems to be helping with his chest and nose congestion.

Yes, I do not buy into the hype over this. It is WAY over the top, IMO.
