Do you know about diaper history?

Just a random thought that crossed my mind as I was putting away dipes this morning. I was wondering how they diapered babies in the past. I could almost imagine them using something like wool longies or pants over a cloth soaker back in Pioneer days.

Do you have any knowledge or theories on diapering through the ages? Share them!

Heres a timeline I found!

My great grandma is still alive so I love talking to her about the 'Old'n Days'. Every mom in my family has always cloth diapered. But they used to make their own diapers. My Great Grammy did use woolies also. Very interesting. She used to use lard!

Re: Do you know about diaper history?

Weird you posted this, i was thinking the SAME thing just earlier *twighlight one theme playig in the background* LOL!
I was actually thinking that my Mom who stayed howm with me CD'd me, and also watched my cousin and a freinds little girl (we were all within 4 months of each other and ALL cd'd) I ask her thingk, but she is lost when i talk about pockets or stuff being cute. She said she used the flats with plastic pants over them. So that got me to thinking they MUST have used wool before plastic... off to heck out that linky!!!

Re: Do you know about diaper history?

I don't know about a hundred years ago, but 50 years ago my Nana washed cloth diapers in a bath tub. And I complain about my frontloader! My mom used flats and prefolds that were passed down to her. She calls them diapers, and the really good diapers with folds.

Re: Do you know about diaper history?

There was an article in Mothering a few issues back about how sposies changed diapering and the CD renaissance we are creating.

My grandma boiled our dipes on the stove! She had one of those huge bins that you put water in, then on the stove and it has a "mushroom" fountain thingy in the middle that makes the water go round

Dipes sure were white though

Re: Do you know about diaper history?

well diapers werent always used, way back in the day, and even now in many "less civilized" countries people recognized that a baby had control over their elimination needs and just cued into it and they would just stop wearing them and give them a tree or something to go on. Now a days its called Elimination Communication.

Re: Do you know about diaper history?

My mom CDed 3 of her kids (not me though!) and she said she washed dipes in the bathtub, too. At the time, she couldn't afford a laundromat or disposables.

ETA: She thinks I am totally nuts for CDing!
