*Update*Help!! I found a tiny magnet in my son's diaper!

Help !!!

I was just spraying out one of my son's diapers after I put him to bed when I found a tiny round magnet (smaller than a pencil eraser) in the BM!! I have no idea what it came off of, or where the mystery object is now! the only thing that I know has magnets in our house are the plastic letters on the fridge, but all of those magnets are rectangle and none seem to be missing. Should I be worried about what he ate and if it is still in there?? AHHHH, I don't know what to do, my DD never ate anything like that!

Help Mommas!

I took DS to the ER on Sunday for x-rays. He was a great trooper through it all. Thankfully no other foreign materials waiting to surprise us. All is well. I will probably never know where it came from. I'm one of the main nursery workers at church, although I wasn't in there last week, and have checked over all the toys, nothing has magnets (or should have)

Unfortunately DD started acting very strangely while we were at the ER. Very lethargic, turning red and splotchy. I ended up having to check her in too (I really just wanted her temp taken b/c she's been sick and on her oral steroids for a while and the thermometer I carry in my diaper bag broke). They said she was fine, interrogated me about giving her oral steroids. Told me a child as small as she is shouldn't be taking them especialy for 10 days. I was VERY upset. I give the meds as directed by my ped and her pulmonologist. Like I could get oral steroids on my own! I don't mess around with lung issues with DD b/c she was a preemie and things get out of control very quickly. Last time we attempted to wait and see instead of doing steroids when the inhalor didn't take care of the breathing issues we ended up in the hospital with pneumonia! Poor girl hit the female doctor who kept trying to examine her. (DD usually asks for the dr and helps with the stethoscope, etc.) She wanted her regular ped and this ER dr kept poking at her and prodding when i asked her to leave her alone! Guess she deserved to be hit. I ended up telling them to just give me the paper work to leave and if they had a problem with the meds she'd been prescribed to get in touch with our lung specialist and ped themselves. Why is it that these people always thing they know better than parents and regular peds just because they work in ER?

Anyway, Thanks for all the advice about the magnet mommas!

DD has a puzzle with magnets on the back of the pieces that are covered by stickers. She got one of the stickers off once. Do you have anything like that?

I don't think so, but I'm going to check. How many days ago do you suppose he ate this? Could it be something from the church nursery Wednesday night?? (today is Saturday)

i would take him to the doc on sunday or monday and ask for a x ray to make sure there arnt any more in there. it could be deadly if there are more and they connect while in the intestine blocking blood flow and "killing" off sections from lack of oxygen........

Re: Help!! I found a tiny magnet in my son's diaper!

It might not hurt to call the doctor on Monday to inform them of the situation and ask what they think.

This is what I found on webmd:

"Swallowed Magnets Are Dangerous"

Multiple Magnets Can Hurt Digestive Tract By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Medical News Reviewed By Brunilda Nazario, MD
on Tuesday, October 26, 2004

Oct. 26, 2004 -- Magnets pose a real danger to children. Intentional or accidental ingestion may require emergency surgery, doctors say.

Children (or adults) who swallow more than one magnet need emergency medical attention, according to radiologist Alan Oestreich, MD, of Cincinnati Children's Hospital in Ohio.

It's never a good idea for kids (or anyone else) to swallow inedible objects, but it happens frequently. According to researchers, most foreign bodies (80%) that reach the stomach get passed yet 10%-20% may require direct retrieval by a doctor. Fewer than 2% of incidents can cause intestinal blockage or rupture requiring emergency intervention.

That's why Oestreich noted the magnet hazard in a letter to the editor of Radiology in the journal's November edition.

Unlike foreign bodies that can pass through the body with relatively little trouble, magnets can seriously damage the stomach or intestine by attracting each other through the lining of different loops of intestine. Ultimately, the magnets could cause a lack of blood flow in the lining and puncture the lining of the intestine.

That's why anyone who swallows multiple magnets should seek immediate medical attention, which could include surgery, says Oestreich.

The advice applies to all ages.

Babies and toddlers, for instance, have natural curiosity but are too young to know much about safety. However, older children and adults could also be hurt by ingesting magnets.

A 12-year-old autistic boy who had swallowed magnets at a summer camp suffered abdominal pain for days until an X-ray showed the magnets, which were then removed.

Likewise, a 9-year-old girl had an intestinal perforation after swallowing 12 small magnets.

Citing those two cases in his Radiology letter, Oestreich urges all radiologists to look out for magnets on abdominal X-rays.

He also warns against using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on any patients who might have swallowed magnets.

Magnets may be more common in homes and schools than you think. They're used as decorative and organizational items (like those on refrigerator doors), toy components, and as therapeutic health objects. Used properly, magnets should not present a problem, as long as they stay outside the body."

Re: Help!! I found a tiny magnet in my son's diaper!

DD1 ate a small round battery(it came out of a light up pen) when she was about 18mos old. It took exactly 48hrs to pass-the ped said it could take up to 4days. I knew for a fact she only got a hold of one so the ped said that since she was breathing/eating fine she knew it wasnt in the throat so there wasnt anything to do/worry about unless it didnt pass w/in 4days. However, since youre not sure where the battery came from I would call the ped for his/her advice.

Re: Help!! I found a tiny magnet in my son's diaper!

yes, get an x-ray. The son of friends of us ate some magnetic sticks and ends (the one you can build sculptures with) and they actually punched his intestens while clipping to each other.
They found out when he started to throw up a lot of blood and all this ended in an emergency operation. He is fine now.
So in this case: better safe than sorry!!!!

Hope they don't find anything!!!

exactly what i was thinking. go asap! my 3 year old is a mouther, everything goes in his mouth, last time he was at the sitter i picked him up and she was telling me about how he loved the kennex (sp?) i kinda freaked inside. i called the pedi too ask about an x-ray and he made me come in the next hour. that's nothing too play about, but i do think it's a good thing that you seen this one come out. at least you know nothing is wrong as of now.
i would also call the church nursery and ask about what toys they have with magnets and be sure they are removed.
