lice question
We just got a note in dd's school folder that someone in her class has lice. And OF COURSE she cam home with her hair in pony tail- one friend put it in the pony tail with another friend's hair tie
. We went over not sharing hair stuff and hats because of lice. I checked her over and think we're good, just wanted to make sure. Nits would be in or on the hair not on the scalp right? All the pictures I find show it on the hair itself. DD has eczema on her scalp so she has white flakes, but they are on her scalp not in her hair at all. I am pretty sure its her eczema, just wanted to make sure that if I were seeing nits on her scalp, I would be seeing them on her hair as well right? Or something on her actual hair not just her scalp. Its scratching off when I touch it. Nothing moving in there. And she is not itching. Dh and I, however, can't seem to stop itching. I have never had lice before or seen them in person, but dh has. he's pretty sure its just her eczema too. But I can't stop scratching.

Tea Tree Oil shampoos can be helpful to prevent lice. Trader Joes makes a reasonably priced one.

And yes, thinking about it will make you itch. Hopefully no one in your home gets them! After that one horrible time, I have the kids shampoo with the Tea Tree Oil shampoo once a week this time of year through the summer and into the early fall as a preventative measure. mom to 3 girls and one little boy

Ugh I so glad we had boys when that went around years ago. It was still a pain though.
Pretty sure they are in the hair like pp said. And you will scratch insensately for a long time thinking about it. :/ I would just wash bedding and pillows (if possible) tomorrow just to be safe. After hair washing tonight I would put the towel in something with a tight fitting lid until tomorrow. You might be able to see if anything matured overnight. Sorry you are having to go through this. Having live does NOT mean you aren't clean. Its just kinda like a virus, some people get them and some dont. Sent from my iPhone using DS Forum most likely while nursing

Re: lice question
If the nit is white, it's hatched. If you find white nits, expect to find live bugs. Nits that haven't hatched are brown. Often they are easier to see in sunlight.
And, you don't have to buy a new shampoo. If you have tea tree oil, just add it right in. Also, live prefer clean hair, so you might seriously consider letting her go greasy, or adding hair spray or something to her hair until the threat passes. |

Re: lice question
Unhatched nits will pop when you squeeze them with your nail, skin flakes will just smush. You can also mix some TTO with water and spritz her hair before she goes to school.

Re: lice question
The RID shampoo burned my daughters head. Her skin peeled. It still didn't get rid of the lice either. We ended up using essential oils I added to our shampoo. They don't kill the eggs just the hatched lice. Using it every day though killed the newly hatched lice before they could reproduce. Everyone in the family used the shampoo for several months to prevent reinfestation. Google which oils work if you want to try this. All I can remember is one of the oils was tea tree oil. We used a mix of like 4 different oils.

Re: lice question
We had lice twice a couple summers ago after my oldest rode in a car next to a girl that had it and no one said anything. My boys usually have their heads shaved so it wasn't too bad. I mixed TTO in our shampoo (suave coconut..apparently lice hate coconut scent) and we all used that. I used the lice treatment and combed all the kids, and then every day after that I'd comb them. The second time there was an outbreak at school and one nit was found on my daughter by the nurse so I treated her and even though my boys and I were fine I treated us again as well to prevent anything. Lice hate clean hair, they hate coconut and TTO helps kill anything new.

We just got rid of lice-it stunk! Nits really cling to the hair. They always seemed to be just a bit away from the scalp. Dandruff moves, nits don't. Heat kills both the adults and the nits.
Lots of combing to check. Heat kills both the nits and the adults so blowdrying is great. If she does get it, we treated with the over the counter meds and mayo on her head. It took two treatments and LOTS of combing and washing bedding. Fingers crossed that she doesn't get it! |
