Four things come not back: The spoken word; the sped arrow; the past life; and the neglected opportunity.

Re: Please refer me a midwife
I'm not sure how far you are from a neighboring state but you could check states close to you. Also, check the actual wording of the law in your state.
After my first two home births, my state pretty much decided that it was ok for my DH and I to birth totally alone in our but not with a certified midwife (um.yeah.) I could still labor with any nut who attends two births and says she is one though. How's that for having the mom and child's best interest at heart? I did check with the local hospital when expecting our 3rd and realized right away that a birth in a hospital setting was not for us. I went on to find a midwife in a neighboring state (45 min drive) who was more than willing to come sit in our home should something go wrong while DH and I labored together. I love home births but even now, after 5, I would do my best to not attempt one at home alone. I'm off to google to see if I can help you find info that informs you of your rights in your state. It may very well be that it IS illegal for you to birth at home regardless of who attends OR it may be that your state is like mine and they simply don't allow *licensed* midwives.

Re: Please refer me a midwife
It does look like what has gone on in my state is what yours has done as well. It doesn't appear to be illegal to birth at home. It's just illegal to have access to "licensed" care at home that doesn't have a back up doctor. Getting a backup doctor is pretty close to impossible for ANY midwife in most states.

Re: Please refer me a midwife
There are 2 CNMs who attend homebirths in NC. One is Nancy Harmen and the other is Carrboro Midwifery, you can google them both. I don't know how far they travel but I know I live in the triad and know people in my area who have used nancy so we are about 2 hours from where she is located, I think you would be about the same distance.
And like the pp have said while there are no legally practicing CPMs in NC many of the CPMs who practice in NC are certified and trained in other states, I would even venture to say *most* are certified and trained in neighboring states (think Virginia and South Carolina).

To the bold: I've heard WONDERFUL things about Nancy Harmen! Look her up no doubt! Also - PP is 100% right, MOST are certified and trained and even licensed in neighboring states such as VA and SC. Yes - how from the VA or SC state line are you? I don't know about the VA state line, but there is an AWESOME new birth center staffed by CPMs in Ft Mill, SC which is 5 minutes from Charlotte, NC. I know NC mama's the have driven 2-3hrs to deliver there.
