"BRAND" method for informed consent/choice/refusal
So often I see people saying "my doctor made me", "he said I had to", "she forced me", "he coerced me" - and it makes my heart hurt. It makes me hurt because I was there during my first birth. I was walked all over and didn't know I even could stand up for myself.
I recently was introduced to the BRAND method of making an informed choice/consent/refusal and wanted to share. I give this handout to all my clients. Informed Choice = Informed Consent = Informed Refusal Your body and your baby are one. You have the right to consent to and refuse anything that interferes with your body or your childs body. As a pregnant woman this means many things. It means that you have the right to be consulted before someone touches you. No person should give you an internal exam without first asking your permission. No person should manipulate your cervix without your prior consent. No person should pressure you into attempting induction unless it is medically necessary. No person should pressure you to dilate faster for his or her own convenience. No person should break your water or cut your perineum without consulting with you first and gaining your permission. You have the right to refuse any course of treatment that you feel is not in your or your babys best interest. No person should rush you to make a decision. These are only a few examples!! There are just so many more! When your health care provider speaks to you about medical interventions, ask the following questions to help yourself make an informed decision. B What are the Benefits of this procedure? R What are the Risks of this procedure? A What are the Alternatives to this treatment/procedure? N What will happen if I choose to do Nothing? D Can we Delay this treatment/procedure?

I'm going to print this out for a friend of mine who is going through a bad breakup with a doctor. She is 32 weeks and being jerked around.

This is really awesome. I think the problem is that it's usually happening almost AS they are asking you. As in checking your cervix and at the same time stretching your cervix and stripping your membranes. I don't like that at all.

Awesome! I have the same handout, only it's BRAIN (benefits, risks, alternatives, intuition and nothing) its a good list to go through for things big and small. (cervical check to cesarean!)

Re: "BRAND" method for informed consent/choice/refusal
Saved it on my computer!
If doctors knew this kind of handout was going around, they'd be livid. They don' WANT us to know we can make an informed refusal. Muahahahaha.

Re: "BRAND" method for informed consent/choice/refusal
If I were seeing an OB, I would show this to them and tell them this is how I expect every decision we face to be made... Together, w/ my understanding and consent, and no coercement.
They prey on the fact that most women are non confrontational. This hand out is a good deflection device for those women too afraid to just come out and say this.
