*update* only 27 weeks and water broke how long till you went into labor?

HI
6/8
Well it seems the boys are going to be born today! Keep those prayers coming....luckily she is just one day shy of 28 weeks!!!

They are here - came out screaming!!! They are 2.15lbs and 3.0lbs.....

6/7
I was just wondering if anyone has had there water break and then not go into labor till much later.....
My niece is preggo with twins and is only 27 weeks and her water has broke. They are giving her some antibiotics and they said that they aren't going to stop her contractions if she does go into labor. She is in the hospital now and will remain there until she delivers her boys.

Anyone experience something like this? what should she expect if the babies are born 27 weeks?

Thanks a bunch! She could use all the prayers she can take - she has had a rough go with this pregnancy.

Are they trying to develop their lungs?

Do you know if it was a "full gush" kinda break or just a leak? If it's just a leak it's possible for it to reseal and that she could stay pregnant quite a while longer. I'll be praying that those babies can stay put a bit longer.

Re: only 27 weeks and water broke how long till you went into labor?

I just spoke to her and she had an ultrasound this morning. Both boys look great and are both to be about 2 lb and 13 oz.....but as you know those are estimates. They did give her 2 rounds of steroid shots and they seem to be working. The boys belly's are moving up and down - practicing breathing!

Her fluid was just a trickle that's why they weren't sure if it was for sure any amniotic or not. But tests did show that it was. They didn't mention sealing it, I don't think they can?

So for now things seem to be stable - we just need to make sure she doesn't get an infection and that she doesn't start contracting!!!!

Re: only 27 weeks and water broke how long till you went into labor?

I'm apologizing in advance for the length of this post. Your niece's story plucked a heart string for me and I just felt compelled to share this with you, if nothing else than to give your family hope during a terrifying time.

A very close and dear friend of mine had her water break at 19 weeks. She and her husband were adamant about not terminating as long as their son was alive in utero. The doctor told her to terminate, which she refused. She said if God wants him, He'll take him and until then he's mine. She was put on COMPLETE bedrest. Her doctor said IF baby makes it to 24 weeks gestation we'll admit you to the hospital. At 24 weeks, baby was still alive in utero, great heart rate, and was passing the little fluid that was left. She was admitted to the high risk ward of the hospital and remained there. She was given antibiotics and steroids to develop baby's lungs throughout the pregnancy. The rip in her sac did not 'reseal' and she leaked through the duration of the pregnancy. But the water continually replenished enough to allow fluid to move through baby's lungs and kidneys. Every step of the way there were hurdles. They were told that the baby would have severe physical abnormalities. That his arms and legs would be locked because his movement was restricted from lack of fluid to move in, he would have one of two lung disorders (one would cause eminent death the other would leave him debilitated), and the list went on and on. We all just waited and PRAYED AND PRAYED AND PRAYED. Her doctors (by this time a team of specialists) decided that if she had not delivered her baby by 34 weeks they would induce her. They did not want him to hit the last growth spurt/weight gain before birth because the space in utero was so restricted (which could have caused a host of other issues). She made it to 34 weeks and was induced. She was allowed to deliver naturally as long as no problems with she or baby occurred. We waited on pins and needles ALL DAY for him to be born. When her husband called me he reported that their son was born "kicking and screaming and pink as a rose"! He stayed 20 days in the NICU and high risk nursery before coming home. It still gives me chills and makes me tear up every time I think about it and when I look at the perfect almost two year old who walks this earth today.

We're believers in the power of prayer, but were forced to be realists. The challenges were known and the varying outcomes were accepted by my friend and her husband. They knew the odds were stacked against them. They knew that their child could be stillborn or only live for a short time. They knew he may never be "normal" but they weren't willing to give up on their child. They were blessed beyond anyone's wildest dreams. I will be praying for your niece, her babies and the wisdom and knowledge of her doctors.

Katie what an amazing story! I have tears streaming down my face.

Mary - Just a trickle is probably the best case scenario at this point. There really is a chance (though I do not personally know the numbers) that it will re-seal its self and she will continue to carry the boys until it's much safer for them to be born. She is in the best place possible right now and trying to stay positive is the best thing she can do. Stress is terrible for her and the babies so anything anyone can do to help bring her some comfort and peace of mind will be of a huge benefit right now.
